The Bordoni internal friction peak in silver single crystals

Abstract: The internal friction of cold-worked single crystals of high-purity silver has been measured in the temperature range 20-160 K at frequencies between 13 and 18 kHz. The temperature of the Bordoni peak was found to be substantially independent of the orientation of the crystal. This result is consistent with earlier work on gold and copper single crystals at kilohertz frequencies; none of these metals shows the orientation dependence of the Bordoni peak which has been observed at megahertz frequencies.

“…These crystals were deformed by compression along the axis of the cylinder in a Monsanto Tensometer at room temperature by giving each of them a resolved shear stress of 20 MPa. The results described here are consistent with those obtained by Brown and Niblett [16] for silver single crystals. In each case the orientation was within three degrees of the appropriate axis.…”

“…The orientation of each crystal was checked after the deformation by the Laue back-reflection X-ray method. Figure 4, which is an Arrhenius plot of the frequency against the reciprocal of the absolute temperature at which the peak occurs, shows that the results of the present work fit well with the measurements of Brown and Niblett [16]. The specimens were left for three days at room temperature after deformation before the ultrasonic attenuation was measured.…”

“…Full-dimensional QCT computational studies of the dynamics of the H 2 + H 2 system were started long before the quantum ones and led to the development of a dynamical model for four-center reactions. The most recent of them were carried out by our group on the ASP PES. In particular, our group studied the dynamics and the kinetics of H 2 + H 2 using both the full dimensionality and the reduced dimensionality trapezoidal model to compare with quantum results. , The mechanisms of the exchange and of the dissociation processes were investigated also for the isotopic variants H 2 + HD and H 2 + D 2 .…”
