BackgroundResource allocation in patient care relies heavily on individual judgements of healthcare professionals. Such professionals perform coordinating functions by managing the timing and execution of a multitude of care processes for multiple patients. Based on advances in simulation, new technologies that could be used for establishing realistic representations have been developed. These simulations can be used to facilitate understanding of various situations, coordination training and education in logistics, decision-making processes, and design aspects of the healthcare system. However, no study in the literature has synthesized the types of simulations models available for non-technical skills training and coordination of care.MethodsA systematic literature review, following the PRISMA guidelines, was performed to identify simulation models that could be used for training individuals in operative logistical coordination that occurs on a daily basis. This article reviewed papers of simulation in healthcare logistics presented in the Web of Science Core Collections, ACM digital library, and JSTOR databases. We conducted a screening process to gather relevant papers as the knowledge foundation of our literature study. The screening process involved a query-based identification of papers and an assessment of relevance and quality.ResultsTwo hundred ninety-four papers met the inclusion criteria. The review showed that different types of simulation models can be used for constructing scenarios for addressing different types of problems, primarily for training and education sessions. The papers identified were classified according to their utilized paradigm and focus areas. (1) Discrete-event simulation in single-category and single-unit scenarios formed the most dominant approach to developing healthcare simulations and dominated all other categories by a large margin. (2) As we approached a systems perspective (cross-departmental and cross-institutional), discrete-event simulation became less popular and is complemented by system dynamics or hybrid modeling. (3) Agent-based simulations and participatory simulations have increased in absolute terms, but the share of these modeling techniques among all simulations in this field remains low.ConclusionsAn extensive study analyzing the literature on simulation in healthcare logistics indicates a growth in the number of examples demonstrating how simulation can be used in healthcare settings. Results show that the majority of studies create situations in which non-technical skills of managers, coordinators, and decision makers can be trained. However, more system-level and complex system-based approaches are limited and use methods other than discrete-event simulation.

Kebutuhan akan darah pada proses transfusi darah terus meningkat tiap tahunnya. Peningkatan terhadap kebutuhan darah perlu diantisipasi melalui peningkatan kesadaran para masyarakat akan pentingnya aktivitas donor darah. Promosi terkait pentingnya donor darah terus dilakukan oleh PMI (Palang Merah Indonesia) selaku organisasi pemerintah yang berwenang mengelola aktivitas tersebut. Upaya-upaya tersebut umumnya dilakukan melalui pengembangan berbagai macam aktivitas yang melibatkan elemen masyarakat (baik orang tua, remaja, maupun anak-anak) agar dapat mengakses informasi terkait proses donor darah. Untuk mendukung aktivitas tersebut dibutuhkan suatu alat promosi yang dapat membantu masyarakat lebih mengenal proses donor darah. Penelitian ini dilakukan untuk mengembangkan sebuah alat promosi aktivitas donor darah dalam bentuk gim. Pengembangan gim diawali dengan menggali elemen gim potensial yang ada pada proses donor darah. Elemen gim tersebut kemudian digunakan sebagai dasar pada proses perancangan gim. Perancangan gim dilakukan dengan menggunakan metode perancangan storyboard. Hasil pengujian oleh pakar gim, relawan PMI, dan pengguna gim (kalangan anak-anak) melalui metode wawancara, didapatkan bahwa gim yang dibuat pada penelitian ini telah berhasil dibuat dengan baik.

Extendable Board Game to Facilitate Learning in Supply Chain Management

Game-based learning has been introduced as an interactive tool to facilitate learning and training processes in various fields, including supply chain management (SCM). Most of these games are specifically designed to focus on certain scenarios and concepts. For example, the original beer distribution game focuses on a single product supply chain without considering capacity and process reliability into account. This creates challenges for extending the games to cover other concepts in SCM. To tackle this problem, we propose a board game, titled ThinkLog, as a face-to-face extendable framework to facilitate learning in SCM. It can be extended to generate different scenarios for various concepts in SCM without changing the basic game structure. Using this principle, we have extended the basic version of ThinkLog to two other scenarios, namely: humanitarian logistics and urban logistics, by simply modifying the rule of the game. Each scenario would have different learning objectives embedded in the gameplay. The game is also complemented with a computer-based application (digital application) to enhance the overall learning experience and collect relevant data (data gathering) during a game session. These three scenarios have been evaluated on four-interactive sessions with government officials and policy-makers in Indonesia. Each session has been consistent in its acceptance of the game as a tool to facilitate learning in SCM, regardless of the scenarios that we played. Our learning objective evaluation also shows that the game is effective in deepening the players' understanding of SCM concepts.
