The biological and reproductive parameters of the invasive armored catfish Pterygoplichthys disjunctivus from Adolfo López Mateos El Infiernillo Reservoir, Michoacán-Guerrero, Mexico

Abstract: Invasive Pterygoplichthys disjunctivus (Weber, 1991) (synonymy: Liposarcus multiradiatus) armored catfish were first reported in Mexico in 1995 and have spread successfully in several aquatic ecosystems. In Adolfo López Mateos El Infiernillo Reservoir, Michoacán -Guerrero, the population of this armored catfish is growing substantially because natural predators are not present and exploitation by humans does not occur. Over a complete annual cycle, we studied the following population parameters: weight, total … Show more

“…Negative allometric growth of Pterygoplichthys spp. with 'b' value of 2.79 found in the present study comply with the findings of Liang et al (2005), Samat et al (2008) and Rueda-Jasso et al (2013), which indicates that the fish tend to become thinner and less round with increasing length. Fluctuation in 'b' values of Pterygoplichthys spp.…”

“…in drainage of Kerala (Bijukumar et al, 2015). The maximum size specimen recorded (1200 g) from EKW is also comparable with the armoured catfish collected from Churumuco, Mexico which was 520 mm in total length (TL) and 1280 g in weight (Rueda-Jasso et al, 2013). Possible existence of still larger individuals of Pterygoplichthys spp.…”

“…In Mexico, its presence was identified for the first time in the Mezcala River, Guerrero (basin of the Balsas River), in 1995 and later in the Grijalva River in 2004, and since that date, the species has expanded to other regions of the country, reaching high abundance in the state of Campeche [33]. is species is considered one of the greatest threats to the biodiversity of continental aquatic ecosystems by its negative effects that include alteration of bank structure and erosion, disruption of aquatic food chains, changes in aquatic plant communities, displacing negative fishes by competition, and consuming its eggs that have a commercial importance in their respective regions [34,35]. Given the absence or few natural predators in the aquifer mantles where this fish has spread [36] and the negative impacts produced on the local fisheries [34], the capture of Amazon sailfin catfish is promoted for its processing and commercial use in various productive sectors [37].…”

“…One possible reason for this could be the spatial distribution of young individuals in the population. It is known that several species of Pterygoplichthys show parental care and make nesting burrows for protecting the young (Lienart et al ., ; Rueda‐Jasso et al ., ). Therefore, there is a need to study in detail the reproductive ecology and breeding strategy of P. pardalis and identify spawning areas to target fingerlings for eradication.…”
