The biochemical effects of ischemia-reperfusion injury in the ipsilateral and contralateral testes of rats and the protective role of melatonin

Abstract: Testicular torsion (TT) is a serious urologic emergency that is observed in adolescent males and that can lead to infertility if left untreated. The ischemia-reperfusion (I/R) injury due to TT has been implicated in the pathogenesis of testicular damage. We investigated the effects of melatonin on oxidative damage in the ipsilateral and contralateral testes of rats induced by unilateral TT. A total of 21 prepubertal male Wistar albino rats were divided into three groups, each consisting of seven rats. In Group… Show more

“…Another explanation for gentamicin induced testicular degeneration may be through the generation of reactive oxygen species, as superoxide, hydrogen peroxide and hydroxyl radical which frequently used to produce oxidative and necrotic damages [45]. This is supported by the appearance of giant cells in seminiferous tubules in gentamicin injected group III in the current work these giant cells are actively engaged in free radical production [46].…”

“…These results demonstrated that the administration of MT may partially reverse the decline of SOD activity following ischemia, whilst simultaneously maintaining the scavenging ability of ischemic tissue to oxygen free radicals, thus reducing damage associated with lipid peroxidation. Parlaktas et al (28) and Kerem et al (29) have also shown that MT can promote the activity of SOD.…”

“…If left untreated within 4 to 6 h, loss of spermatogenic cells will occur[9] leading to harmful results such as infertility and subfertility[10]. The degree of twisting of the spermatic cord may also play an important role.…”
