Recebido em 8/2/08; aceito em 2/9/08; publicado na web em 15/4/09 MATRIX EFFECT IN PESTICIDE QUANTIFICATION BY GAS CHROMATOGRAPHY. The lack of accuracy of a chromatographic method can be associated with the matrix effect. This effect is observed in pesticide quantification by gas chromatography when the chromatographic signals of standards prepared in solvents are compared with those of the analyte in extracts of complex matrices. In the competition between the matrix components and the pesticides for the active sites of the liner, a larger amount of pesticides is transferred to the column, giving apparent extractions above 100%. In this work, we discuss factors that contribute to the matrix effect and present some attempts to overcome the problem.

Substituted phenylhydrazone moieties and two carbonate groups were merged in one molecule scaffold to obtain 48 novel compounds. 1 H and 13 C NMR, MS, elemental analysis, and X-ray single-crystal diffraction were used to confirm their structures. Bioassay results revealed that some of the compounds have strong antifungal activities against Botrytis cinerea, Rhizoctonia solani, and Colletotrichum capsici (especially Rhizoctonia solani). Compound 5H 1 is the most promising of the tested compounds against R. solani with an EC 50 value of 1.91 mg/L, which is comparable with the positive control fungicide drazoxolon (1.94 mg/L). The structure-activity relationships against R. solani formed three rules: 1) small carbonate groups may improve the antifungal activity of the title compounds; 2) electron-withdrawing groups at the phenyl ring of phenylhydrazone are preferable to their non-substituted counterparts; and 3) halogen at the para position is more beneficial than at the ortho or meta position.

a b s t r a c tAn electrochemical sensor for the determination of the chlorophenoxy herbicide MCPA has been developed, based on a combination of multi-walled carbon nanotubes with incorporated b-cyclodextrin and a polyaniline film modified glassy carbon electrode. The proposed molecular host-guest recognition based sensor has a high electrochemical sensitivity for the determination of MCPA. The electrochemical behaviour of MCPA at the chemically modified electrode was investigated in detail by cyclic voltammetry. The results indicate that the b-CD/MWCNT modified glassy carbon electrode exhibits efficient electrocatalytic oxidation of MCPA with high sensitivity, stability and lifetime. The analytical characteristics of this film were used for the quantitative determination of MCPA in natural waters. Cyclic voltammetry in phosphate buffer solution at pH 6.0, allowed the development of a method to determine MCPA, without any previous steps of extraction, clean-up, or derivatization, in the range of 10-100 mmol L À 1 , with a detection limit of 0.99 mmol L À 1 in water. The results were statistically compared with those obtained through an established high-performance liquid chromatography technique, no significant differences having been found between the two methods.
