The baboon model (Papio hamadryas) of fetal loss: maternal weight, age, reproductive history and pregnancy outcome

Abstract: Background Several risk factors are associated with the incidence of human stillbirths. The prevention of stillbirths in women is a pressing clinical problem. Methods We reviewed 402 pathology records of fetal loss occurring in a large baboon (Papio spp.) colony during a 15-year period. Clinical histories of 565 female baboons with one or more fetal losses during a 20-year period were analyzed for weight, age, and reproductive history. Results Fetal loss was most common at term (35.57%) and preterm (28.61%… Show more

“…The pathological conditions associated with obesity in the human population are insulin resistance, hyperlipidemia, and risk of stillbirth. The same associations have been also found in baboons [20, 21, 44]. The incremental differences of body fat content between obese and non-obese baboons are close to those seen in humans [18].…”

“…Another non-human primate species, the baboon, has been extensively studied as a model for obesity [18, 19]. Increased weight in this species has been associated with insulin resistance [20] and stillbirth [21]. These data are in agreement with the published human data.…”

“…Baboons have already been used on a wide variety of reproductive studies, including pregnancy [40, 41, 42, 43,] fetal development [44, 45,] pharmacokinetics of compounds in pregnancy [46, 47,] abortifactant drugs [48,]nutrient restriction and the maternal/fetal relationship [49,] genetics [50,] endometriosis [51, 52,] hormonal [14, 16, 21, 53, 54, 55, 56,] temporary contraception [57, 58,] embryonic stem cells and ART [13,] pathology [59, 60,] and permanent contraception [18.] Their temperament and similarities to human anatomy warrant their continued use for reproductive studies.…”

“…The first day of pregnancy was estimated as the day a female’s sexual swelling began to decrease minus two days (26). In cases where the cycle data were not available, pregnancy was dated by ultrasound examination under sedation.…”
