The Australian Sciapodinae (Diptera: Dolichopodidae), with a review of the Oriental and Australasian faunas, and a world conspectus of the subfamily

Abstract: ABSTRACT. The Sciapodinae (Diptera: Dolichopodidae) of Australia (including Lord Howe, Norfolk, Cocos-Keeling and Christmas Islands) are treated in detail, and 253 species, 208 newly described, are illustrated and keyed. All described Oriental and extralimital Australasian species are critically reviewed, with notes on diagnostic characters, distribution and generic placement, along with many new combinations ancl synonymies and some keys. Further, the taxonomy of the subfamily is considered at world level, wi… Show more

“…Most discussions regarding subfamily re1ationships are based primarily on the morphology of the male hypopygium and the pregenitalic segments (Negrobov, 1986;Bickel, 1994). There are two main morphological forms of the dolichopodid hypopygium, the "encapsulated" condition and the "pedunculate" condition.…”

“…Bickel (1994) hypothesized a close relationship between the Sciapodinae and Dolichopodinae and used the latter as the outgroup for his analysis ofthe sciapodine genera. More recently, Ulrich (unpublished) hypothesized a relationship between the Sympycninae (inc1uding the Peloropeodinae) and Dolichopodinae based on the possession ofwell-developed anterior to anterodorsal preapical seta on the hind femur.…”

“…As in the previous Palaearctic and Nearctic Achalcus revisions (Pollet, 1996;Pollet & Cumming, 1998), the following biometric ratios on the lengths of antennae and wings were measured in as many specimens as possible in order to provide additional diagnostic criteria: (i) body length; (ii) wing length; (iii) ratio of proximal versus apical section of vein CuA1; (iv) ratio of apical section of vein CuA1 versus outer crossvein (m-cu or tp), the so-called CuAx ratio (Bickel, 1994); (v) ratio (length) of first flagellomere versus scape and pedicel combined; (vi) ratio of arista versus first three joints of antenna. In addition, (vii) the ratio of the proximal versus the apical section of vein M1+2 was also calculated.…”

“…Mesorhaga is a cohesive, well defined, cosmopolitan genus recognized by a combination of the distinctive overall habitus, venation, and highly derived male postabdomen (Bickel, 1994). The Mesoamerican fauna comprises some 11 species and was recently revised (Bickel, 2007).…”
