While certainly the Atlantic Alliance was a product of the Cold War, its historical and cultural foundations were much older. This chapter considers both the short-term path which in the early Cold War years brought to the Atlantic Pact and the long-term history of the relations between Europe and the United States, focusing in particular on the Anglo-American special relationship. The chapter also re-examines isolationism, arguing that since its origins the American nation envisaged for itself a future of world domination. After the Second World War, a marriage of convenience took place between the United States and most countries of Western Europe. The Preamble and art. 2 of the Atlantic Treaty of 1949 expressed the aspiration to building something more than a mere military alliance, but as a matter of fact, these provisions were never put into practice. Considering the values, these were never identical and the differences widened after the Cold War. However, from this point of view Europe and North America remain the geopolitical area in the world with the closest interests and affinities.

Zusammenfassung: Deutschland hat aufgrund seiner geographischen Lage, politischen und wirtschaftlichen Größe und Bedeutung innerhalb der EU eine besondere Rolle und Verantwortung für eine erfolgreiche Zukunft der transatlantischen allianz. sie erlaubt es Deutschland aktiv bei der Lösung transatlantischer Probleme zu helfen, diplomatischen spielraum im NaTO Bündnis zu schaffen und transatlantische Politik aktiv zu gestalten, anstatt stoisch die zentralen Bedeutung des Bündnisses zu rezitieren. Diese schlüsselstellung ( linchpin) wird im Folgenden anhand von zwei Themenkomplexen (NaTO/afghanistan sowie Russland) diskutiert.Abstract: Germany-given its geographical location, political and economic size and importance within the EU-has a special role and responsibility for the future of the transatlantic alliance. Germany is well-placed to be an effective partner in solving transatlantic problems, to help establish diplomatic leeway in the alliance, and to actively shape transatlantic policy rather than stoically reciting the central importance of the alliance. This key position of Germany is discussed below with reference to two subject areas: NaTO/afghanistan, and Russia.

The Politics of Crisis in Europe explores the resilience of the European Union in the face of repeated crises perceived to threaten its very existence. While it is often observed after the fact that these crises serve as opportunities for integration, this is the first critical analysis to suggest that we cannot fully understand the nature and severity of these crises without recognising the role of societal reaction to events and the nature of social narratives about crisis, especially those advanced by the media. Through a close examination of the 2003 Iraq crisis, the 2005 constitutional crisis, and the 2010–12 Eurozone crisis, this book identifies a pattern across these episodes, demonstrating how narratives about crises provide the means to openly air underlying societal tensions that would otherwise remain under the surface, impeding further integration.
