In this article, the rationale behind the creation of a new journal, Astronomy Theory, Observations and Methods (ATOM) journal, currently hosted at rtsre.org is provided. It aims to fill a niche in the community for papers on any general topic in astronomy that may not find their place in top tier astronomical journals. The article outlines the thinking behind why there is a gap to be filled with regards to current scholarly metrics and the nature of other journals of similar scope and impact. The journal aims to be accessible to new and novice scientific authors, as well as those more established, through accessible developmental peer review and an explicit aim to avoid using publication metrics as a barrier to publication selection. The scope, which accepts more broader articles than most, of the journal and considerations on behalf of a potential author are also outlined.

We present early-time (t < +50 days) observations of SN 2019muj (= ASASSN-19tr), one of the best-observed members of the peculiar SN Iax class. Ultraviolet and optical photometric and optical and near-infrared spectroscopic follow-up started from ∼5 days before maximum light (tmax(B) on 58 707.8 MJD) and covers the photospheric phase. The early observations allow us to estimate the physical properties of the ejecta and characterize the possible divergence from a uniform chemical abundance structure. The estimated bolometric light curve peaks at 1.05 × 1042 erg s−1 and indicates that only 0.031 M⊙ of 56Ni was produced, making SN 2019muj a moderate luminosity object in the Iax class with peak absolute magnitude of $M_\rm {V} = -16.4$ mag. The estimated date of explosion is t0 = 58 698.2 MJD and implies a short rise time of trise = 9.6 days in B-band. We fit of the spectroscopic data by synthetic spectra, calculated via the radiative transfer code TARDIS. Adopting the partially stratified abundance template based on brighter SNe Iax provides a good match with SN 2019muj. However, without earlier spectra, the need for stratification cannot be stated in most of the elements, except carbon, which is allowed to appear in the outer layers only. SN 2019muj provides a unique opportunity to link extremely low-luminosity SNe Iax to well-studied, brighter SNe Iax.

We perform a new analysis of the M dwarf-M dwarf eclipsing binary system NSVS 07394765 in order to investigate the reported hyper-inflated radius of one of the component stars. Our analysis is based on archival photometry from the Wide Angle Search for Planets (WASP), new photometry from the 32 cm Command Module Observatory (CMO) telescope in Arizona and the 70 cm telescope at Thacher Observatory in California, and new high-resolution infrared spectra obtained with the Immersion Grating Infrared Spectrograph (IGRINS) on the Discovery Channel Telescope. The masses and radii we measure for each component star disagree with previously reported measurements. We show that both stars are early M-type main-sequence stars without evidence for youth or hyper-inflation (M 1 = 0.661 +0.008 −0.036 M , M 2 = 0.608 +0.003 −0.028 M , R 1 = 0.599 +0.032 −0.019 R , R 2 = 0.625 +0.012 −0.027 R ), and we update the orbital period and eclipse ephemerides for the system. We suggest that the likely cause of the initial hyper-inflated result is the use of moderate-resolution spectroscopy for precise radial velocity measurements.
