The Association of Goitrous Autoimmune Thyroiditis with HLA‐DR5*

Abstract: We found HLA‐DR5 to be present among 53% of 40 patients with goitrous autoimmune (Hashimoto's) thyroiditis compared to 26% of 80 controls. No deviations from those expected in the incidences of HLA‐A, B, C antigens were seen. In contrast HLA‐DR3 was increased among 50 patients with atrophic thyroiditis (65%) compared to controls (24%). These findings stress the immunogenetic heterogeneity between the goitrous and atrophic varieties of thyroiditis.

“…Because the HLA region is highly polymorphic and contains many immune response genes, it was the first candidate for a genetic region to be studied for association with HT [35]. Earlier studies showed an association of goitrous HT with HLA-DR5 and of atrophic HT with HLA-DR3 [36,37]. Later studies have reported association of HT with HLA-DR3, HLA-DR4, or HLA-DR5 in Caucasian patients [38][39][40][41][42].…”

“…6,7 Many small studies have investigated association of the HLA class II region with HT (Table 1). Several associations including DRB1*03, DRB1*04 and the DR3 and DRB1*04-DQB1*03-DQA1*03 (DR4) haplotypes have been proposed 8,13,18,20 however, due to a lack of replication between studies, progress in determining HLA class II associations in HT has been much slower, leaving confusion over whether GD and HT share the same susceptibility loci within this region.…”

“…Ранее проведенные исследования показали ассоциацию зоб-ной формы АИТ с HLA-DR5 [45] и атрофической формой АИТ с DR3 у кавказоидов [46]. Более поздние исследования у кав-казоидов выявили слабые ассоциации АИТ с HLA-DR3 [47,48] и HLA-DR4 [49].…”
