Background The status of nurses who form the backbone of the health system, and the society’s perspective on nursing has undergone serious transformations during the COVID-19 pandemic. The visibility of nurses, who constantly fought on the front lines in the harsh conditions of the pandemic, increased even more in this period. Thus, this study was aimed at determining Turkish people’s perception of nursing during the COVID-19 pandemic and investigating whether there is a significant relationship between the mean score obtained from the Nursing Image Scale and the descriptive variables. Method The sample of this cross-sectional study consisted of 420 Turkish citizens. The “Descriptive Characteristics Form” and “Nursing Image Scale” were used to collect data. In addition to descriptive analysis, the t-test and One-Way ANOVA test were used. Results Turkish people’s nursing image during the COVID-19 pandemic was highly positive. Individuals who stated that they had a chronic disease perceived nursing as a professional occupation, which transformed their current nursing image to a more positive image during the COVID-19 pandemic and the mean score they obtained from the Nursing Image Scale was statistically significantly high. Conclusion We concluded that Turkish people’s perceptions of nurses changed for the better during the pandemic and their awareness of nursing improved. It is the nurses’ responsibility to improve the nursing image of the society. Therefore, it is critical for nurses to create a modern nurse image picturing them as producers of scientific knowledge and independent leaders.

Online self-learning became widespread after the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, and during this period, learners’ self-leadership became an important measure of their competency. This study aims to verify the validity and reliability of the tool by translating the Abbreviated Self-Leadership Questionnaire (ASLQ) into Korean. Through web-based surveys, 286 nursing students from two university nursing colleges participated in the study. Cronbach’s α, correlation, and confirmatory factor analyses were used to verify the nine-item ASLQ. The factor loading values ranged from 0.378 to 0.892. The ASLQ model fit had a comparative fit index of 0.944, root mean square error of approximation of 0.093, and standardized root mean residual of 0.069. The ASLQ showed a statistically significant positive correlation with the original self-leadership, emotional intelligence, and self-efficacy questionnaires. Additionally, structural, convergent, and criterion validity were also evident. The reliability of the ASLQ was 0.846 for Cronbach’s α (the three sub-dimensions were 0.836, 0.732, and 0.734). This study verified the validity and reliability of the ASLQ and confirmed that it could be used to measure the self-leadership of nursing students at a time when self-leadership is crucial.

A Study on the Effect of Nursing Students’ Major Satisfaction and Nursing Professionalism on Career Preparation Behavior in a Non-face-to-face Educational Environment Caused by COVID-19

Background: Career preparation behavior is a challenge among nursing students during the COVID-19 pandemic. Nursing students' adaptation to a non-face-to-face educational environment, lack of interaction with others, and fear of infectious disease may affect career preparation behavior. Objectives:The purpose of this study was to identify factors that influence the career preparation behavior in the non-face-to-face educational environment caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.Methods: Data were collected in October 2022 from 130 nursing students from a college in City A. A total of 119 questionnaires were analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-tests, a one-way ANOVA, Pearson correlation, and stepwise multiple regression. Results:The findings show that major satisfaction had a significant positive correlation with career preparation behavior (r=0.56, p<0.001). Nursing professionalism showed a significant positive correlation with career preparation behavior (r=0.57, p<0.001). The factors influencing career preparation behavior included major satisfaction, nursing professionalism, and satisfaction with clinical practice. Nursing professionalism was the most influential factor (β=0.35), followed by major satisfaction (β=0.33). Together they had an explanatory power of 37%. Conclusions:The results of this study indicate that nursing college students who experienced the COVID-19 pandemic should search for ways to increase their major satisfaction and nursing professionalism programs should be increased to improve career preparation behavior.
