The Association Between Healthy Lifestyle Behaviours and Coronavirus Protective Behaviours

Abstract: Background Based on models of cross-behavioural associations and the role of past behaviour in predicting behaviour, an association was hypothesized between healthy lifestyle behaviours prior to the COVID-19 pandemic and adherence to coronavirus protective behaviours. Self-assessed health was also examined as a potential moderator. Methods A cross-sectional sample (N = 463) completed online questionnaires during a COVID-19-related lockdown that measured engagement in healthy lifestyle behaviours (e.g., exercis… Show more

“…As such, highly health-conscious customers would then be more likely to evaluate the safety cues more critically than less healthconscious consumers. In the current market, in which customer desire for a healthy lifestyle and hygienic shopping environment is on the rise (Nudelman et al, 2021), it is likely that highly healthconscious customers would recognize higher personal well-being when their assessment of SafeCX is positive, compared to consumers with lower levels of health consciousness. As such, when their assessment of SafeCX is positive, they should feel more confident in their assessment of safety/security cues and feel more assured about their safety/security in the retailer's shopping environments.…”

“…Thus, adherence to health claims might be associated with adherence to behavioral restrictions related to the pandemic. In agreement with this observation, a recent study showed that healthy lifestyles were associated with higher adherence to protective behaviors and norms during the pandemic in a nonmedical sample of adults from Israel [31]. In the same line, unhealthy lifestyles-namely, drinking and smokinghave been identified as barriers to following government restrictions in people between 20 and 64 years in Denmark [32] and Japan [33].…”

“…Regarding sociodemographic indicators, we hypothesized that women [8][9][10][11][12][13], people who live with others [14], and the unemployed [8,13,15] might report higher adherence to government restrictions. Moreover, recalling the interrelation between health behavior patterns [31][32][33], we hypothesized that people who worsened their lifestyles during the pandemic might be less willing to follow the rules.…”

“…The very few related studies on health behaviour under Covid, relative to previous health behaviour, found similar results. 24,25 Nudelman et al 24 observe that individuals who engaged in healthy lifestyle behaviours before the emergence of Covid were more likely to exhibit protective behaviours against the virus. Mantell et al 25 also found that many commercial sex workers (80.1%), who used condoms with their patrons before Covid, wore facemasks to prevent them from contracting Covid in their line of work.…”
