Otitis is an ear inflammation characterized by an accumulation of polluted fluids in the ear, inflating the drum, causing ear pain, and draining the mucous membrane (pus) into the ear canal if the drum is perforated. Swimmer’s otitis, also known as acute external otitis, is a medical condition that frequently affects competitive swimmers. The risk factor analysis study was based on data obtained between May 2018 and May 2019 from four public swimming pools in Patras, Achaia. A checklist was created to evaluate the pools’ operational conditions, and it included information on the pools’ sanitation as well as swimming pool hygiene guidelines. In addition, a questionnaire was devised to collect data on pool swimmers’ use of the pools. Microbiological testing of the pool water was done ahead of time, and data on external otitis cases from hospitals was gathered. Based on this information, a risk factor analysis was conducted. Gender, weight, and age do not appear to have an impact on the number of otitis media cases that occur because of swimming in the pools. There is also no statistically significant link between episodes and the frequency of otitis events in locker rooms, restrooms, or swimming pools. The frequency with which swimmers utilize the pool, rather than the pool’s microbial burden, is the most significant determinant in otitis episodes. Furthermore, there is no statistically significant link between chlorine odor and otitis episodes. Additionally, several abnormalities in the ear or the child’s history do not appear to affect otitis episodes. More research is needed to determine whether infections are linked to microbial load or if other factors are responsible for the emergence of waterborne infections.

A Case Report: Ruptured of Pyogenic Liver Abscess

Background: Most causative of liver abscess, in about 90% of all cases, are pyogenic abscess. One of the rare and dangerous complications of pyogenic liver abscess (PLA) that requires urgent management, even with nonspecific signs and symptoms, is abscess rupture. Case Presentation: A 27 years old male patient came to the hospital with persistent right upper abdominal pain. The pain started one week ago after the patient fell from the stairs, where the right side of the abdomen hit the stairs. Abdominal ultrasound revealed heteroechoic lesion with ill borders, irregular margin, and internal moving echo (+) in the right lobe of the liver, which on color doppler examination showed minimal perilesional vascularization. The patient underwent abdominal computed tomography (CT) scan with contrast four days later with showed rim enhancing semisolid lesion (23-33 HU) with air density (-925 HU) within it in, in the segments V to VIII of the right lobe of the liver partially ruptured in the periphery of segments VI-VII of the liver lobe with pneumoperitoneum and ascites. A week later, a laparotomy was performed, and the culture of the pus specimen revealed growth of Escherichia coli. Conclusion:Based on clinical symptoms and imaging, PLA is not without any challenges in diagnosis. The key to avoiding misdiagnosis of ruptured PLA is a meticulous examination of the clinical and imaging also vigilant monitoring.

A review of zoonotic pathogens in Tilapia

Oreochromis niloticus, or Nile tilapia, is widely consumed. This fish can cause several direct ecological imbalances in addition to transporting several pathogens. Pathogens in tilapia are responsible for several deaths in natural environments and commercial aquaculture, and hense, constitute an economic, social, and sanitary threat. This study gathered information from the literature and identified 18 species of pathogens with zoonotic potential found in tilapia, in addition to mapping the distribution of these fishes in Brazilian natural environments. We found that the most common pathogens involved were bacteria, protozoa, fungi and helminths (Trematoda and Nematoda). In Brazil, we also identified that the introduction of O. niloticus has grown in recent decades, and O. niloticus have been found mainly in the eastern region of the country, overlaying the region with the highest fish population density in Brazil. This work serves as an alert and a guide for planning public health policies to mitigate the possible consequences of the uncontrolled introduction of tilapia in the national territory.
