The Applications of Zeolite in Sustainable Binders for Soil Stabilization

Abstract: In order to decrease the environmental impact caused by Portland cement in binders for soil stabilization, Zeolite was chosen to replace some percentage of Portland cement. Unconfined Compressive Strength (UCS) was used as a recognized parameter for assessing the performance of soil stabilization. The UCS values of the Zeolite-PC mix in three binder dosages (2.5%, 5.0% and 10%) and at three curing periods (7 days, 28 days and 90 days) were for two model soils; namely a gravel sand and a clayey silt. The experi… Show more

“…In the case of wastewater treatment in an industrial plant, the regeneration of zeolites would be the most acceptable solution with the reuse the regenerate in an industrial process. In contrast, by applying a zeolite for in situ remediation of mercurycontaminated sites, since it shows a low degree of mercury leaching, the saturated zeolite could be stabilized/solidified into building materials and used for fills and embankment, especially in road construction [60][61][62].…”

“…Previous studies indicated that the natural zeolite could be used for improving the strength parameters and interfacial microstructure properties of cement due to pozzolanic reaction with Ca(OH) 2 because it contains of reactive SiO 2 and Al 2 O 3 [19][20][21][22][23][24][25]. However, there are few studies on the influence of natural zeolite as an additive material on the stabilized soil as environmentally friendly approaches [25][26][27][28][29][30][31]. Zeolites are microporous, hydrated aluminosilicates of alkali and alkali earth cations which commonly used as commercial adsorbents and catalysts.…”

“…Bazı araştırmacılar ise volkan küllerini, killerin şişme özelliklerini azaltmak amaçlı kullanmış ve sonuçta yörede bulunan volkanik küllerin, şişebilen killere katılmasıyla maksimum kuru birim hacim ağırlık, optimum su içeriği, kayma mukavemeti ve Kaliforniya taşıma oranı (CBR) gibi zemin değerlerinin artığını göstermişlerdir [8,9]. Bunun yanında, çeşitli Volkanik Kül (<50 Mikron) malzemelerin alt temel ve dolgu malzemesi olarak kullanımına yönelik araştırmalar ise her geçen gün artmaktadır [10][11][12]. Benzer olarak, yüksek fırın cürufların yol dolgularında başarılı olarak kullanıldığını gösteren oldukça fazla çalışma literatürde vardır [13,14] Yollarda dolgu, alttemel ve temel malzemesi olarak volkanik cüruf çakılının performansını iyileştirmek için birçok stabilizasyon tekniği kullanarak araştırmalar yapılmıştır [15][16][17].…”
