The Application of Human Capital Theory and Educational Signalling Theory to Explain Parental Influences on the Chinese Population’s Social Mobility Opportunities

Abstract: Existing studies argue life chances are, in part, vertically reproduced. Such a statement is applicable to the Chinese contexts as, but not limited to, parental hukou status, to some extent, determines the life chances their children receive. In this essay, the author would like to introduce human capital theory (HCT) and educational signalling theory (EST), and assess how the applications of each of these two models can enrich the understanding of vertical reproduction of individuals’ social mobility opportun… Show more

“…In line with the review of literature, the theories that underpinned this study are the human capital theory by Becker (1964), and the social exchange theory by Homans (1958). Human capital represents the skills, abilities, and knowledge of individuals employed in the organisation (Jason and Ramsden 2021). The tenet of human capital theory in this study is that employees are assets to the organisation that must be provided with relevant knowledge that would enable them to accomplish their task; otherwise, when the old knowledge fades, they would be tempted to leave the organisation in search of greener pasture elsewhere.…”

“…Theodore Schultz developed the theory in the 1960s and improved by Gary Becker, as described in the latter's landmark book, Human Capital, where he described Journal of Business Management, Entrepreneurship and Innovation, Volume 6, Issue 1, 2024, PP 1-20, ISSN 2707-8027 various types of capitals, such as education, computer training, and medical care expenses (Hung & Ramsden, 2021). Becker, while comparing capital investments, noted that human capital is the most useful and he distinguished into two types: specific (firm) as well as general-purpose human resource.…”
