The application of Green Lean Six Sigma

Abstract: Green Lean Six Sigma has been recently clarified to improve the environmental sustainability performance of operations, but it seems glaringly scarce and in need of cutting-edge studies to integrate the concepts of green, lean, and Six Sigma into one unified application. This paper is accordingly aimed at constituting the application of Green Lean Six Sigma as a cleaner production. In doing so, a Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve, and Control (DMAIC)-based approach that is one of Six Sigma's well-known methods… Show more

“…However, this strategy does not address the life cycle aspects nor fully implement the environmental improvement initiatives, which pose challenges towards effectively achieving environmental sustainability goals (Banawi & Bilec, 2014; Zhang, 1999). Therefore, researchers have emphasized an integrated GLSS approach as an environmental management strategy to overcome the drawbacks of GL and LSS combinations (Garza‐Reyes, 2015; Gholami et al, 2021). Such an integrated strategy can improve the environmental performance by identifying environmental impacts and removing waste, with common characteristics of waste reduction, value addition, and customer satisfaction (Farrukh et al, 2020; Gaikwad & Sunnapwar, 2020).…”

“…To achieve these objectives, a green‐lean‐six sigma (GLSS) strategy is proposed (Garza‐Reyes, 2015) as one of the promising approaches in which green addresses the environmental waste, lean removes non‐value‐adding activities and reduces operational waste, and six sigma minimizes defects and controls process variation. It is argued that the application of these strategies in an integrated way provides significant environmental benefits (Banawi & Bilec, 2014; Gholami et al, 2021).…”

“…DMAIC-based methodology is proposed to use sustainable VSM for sustainable manufacturing [28]. The terminology of Green Lean Six Sigma for sustainable VSM is adopted in [24]. An operational entropy model of operation-logistics systems in order to determine the operational efficiency has been developed and used in a case study in [54].…”

“…It should also be noted that there exists a research gap whereby the circular economy was not discussed in the available literature. Hence, future studies should touch on the sustainability-oriented VSM in the new paradigm of circular economy such that the investigation of [78] involved Environmental-VSM in facilitating the process of moving towards a circular business strategy or [79] that investigated how VSM can be extended to incorporate the critical aspects of circular economy. On top of that, the research on the convergence of this sustainability-oriented application and IR 4.0 should be also strengthened in future discussions for the sake of sustainable value stream development as the adoption of the IR 4.0 technologies in production will lead to greater efficiencies [62].…”
