The Application of GIS and Remote Sensing in a Spatiotemporal Analysis of Coastline Retreat in Rufisque, Senegal

Abstract: This paper is aimed at analyzing the phenomenon of shoreline retreat in the locality of Rufisque from 1978 to 2018 mainly using geospatial data and field visits. A set of Landsat images from different dates at 10 year intervals was then acquired through the United States Geological Survey platform and shoreline change analysis was run using the Digital Shoreline Analysis System. In addition to that desktop work, interactions with local residents allowed the determination of ongoing adaptation strategies actual… Show more

“…The initial approach predominantly involved the interpretation of an antiquated geological map, utilizing sea level as a reference point. Subsequently, a second method was adopted, leveraging contemporary geospatial tools such as satellite imagery, cadastral maps, and aerial photographs [47]. Numerous studies on shoreline dynamics in the Saint Louis region, particularly within the Langue de Barbarie (LB), have utilized modern geospatial tools, as evidenced by previous research [5,[16][17][18][19]21,25].…”

“…Koulibaly and Ayoade [94] also advised authorities in coastal Rufisque, Senegal, to concentrate coastal protection facilities and to include a community dimension in local and national plans for adaptation to sea level rise and related impacts such as coastal erosion. Guerrera et al [58] advised coastal authorities in Togo to develop urgent measures to mitigate the problem of shoreline change and coastal erosion, as well as the need to include effective solutions in the 2018-2022 national development plan.…”
