The applicability of new training systems for sweet cherry in Turkey

Abstract: IntroductionSweet cherry production in Turkey (almost 500,000 t annually) has increased rapidly, a large portion of which is exported to Europe, Russia, China, and the USA (http:// faostat3.fao.org/download/Q/QC/E). In Turkey, 0900 Ziraat is the most important exported cultivar, accounting for 95% of exported cherry exports of the country. Numerous studies have been carried out globally to increase yield and fruit quality of sweet cherries, save labor and time, and reduce production costs (

“…Furthermore, these differences may become more pronounced as the trees age and reach full canopy. Similarly, previous studies have also highlighted the effect of the rootstock [7][8][9][10], cultivar [4,6] (and training system [13,25] on fruit quality characteristics in sweet cherry.…”

“…Vol.66: e23220688, 2023 www.scielo.br/babt harvest, resulting in low yields of poor-quality fruit [2]. To alleviate this problem, ideal scion x rootstock x training system combinations must be identified for a given climate [4,13]and will have a direct effect on tree growth and vigour [13,25]. [3] also reported that different scion x rootstock x training systems perform differently in different regions.…”

“…Fruit growers actively introduce/plant sweet cherry orchards on medium-and strong-growing rootstock; there they form tress with round crowns, including KGB type, Spanish bush, round small crown and others [Szpadzik et al, 2019]. The use of leader crown formations (TSA, SSA) in the orchards leads to precocity and better-quality fruit, but it causes some disadvantages, such as higher labor costs for pruning and irregular tree fruiting [Neilsen et al, 2016;Soysal et al, 2019;Long et al, 2015].…”
