The chemical composition and antimicrobial activity of Cymbopogon winterianus Jowitt (syn. Cymbopogon nardus (L.) W. Watson var. mahapengiri Winter) (Poaceae) and Carum carvi L. (Apiaceae) essential oils were investigated against 19 fungal and 7 bacterial species. Among the tested species were food contaminants, spoilage fungi, as well as plant or fungi and animal pathogens. In order to determine minimal inhibitory concentrations (MICs) minimal fungicidal concentrations (MFCs) and minimal bactericidal concentrations (MBCs), microdilution tests were used. Citronellal and trans-geraniol were dominant in Cymbopogon winterianus oil, whereas carvone and limonene were the main components in Carum carvi oil. The essential oil of C. carvi possessed stronger antifungal and antibacterial potential than did citronella oil

Static headspace GC-MS method coupled with H/D exchange was firstly developed to determine and identify the volatile components in the fresh root and rhizome of Curcuma wenyujin. The TIC chromatograms of 3 batches of fresh roots harvested at different time showed significant difference in the volatile components: the constitution was the same but the content of them was different. More than 60 volatile components in fresh roots (Root of C. wenyujin) and rhizomes (Rhizome of C. wenyujin) of C. wenyujin were detected, of which 51 and 48 volatile components were identified respectively. The fresh roots and rhizomes of C. wenyujin were found to have the similar volatile components. The contents of these components were calibrated by the response of β-elemene. In addition, the principal active component, β-elemene, was further confirmed and relatively quantified by its standard. γ-terpinene showed obvious allylic hydrogen/deuterium exchange using deuterium oxide which gave a new method to identify some compounds containing allylic hydrogen. At the same time, the active hydrogen compounds were also further confirmed. The results show that HS-GC-MS method is a fast, simple and efficient way for the analysis of volatile components from medical plants.

The chemical composition of the leaf essential oil of Melaleuca quinquenervia (Cav.) S. T. Blake from NewCaledonia has been investigated on 133 samples collected from seven harvesting locations on the island. Forty-two components were identified by GC-MS analysis and the major ones were 1,8-cineole (0.1-76%), viridiflorol (0-67%), p-cymene (0 -40%), γ γ γ γ γ-terpinene (0-33%), α α α α α-pinene (0-30%), α α α α α-terpineol (0-24%), terpinolene (0-19%), limonene (0.1-16%) and ledol (0-21%). Viridiflorol and ledol, two sesquiterpene alcohols, were identified unambiguously by 1 H-and 13 C-NMR analyses. A sulphur compound, methylthiobenzoate, was characterized by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Niaouli essential oils from New Caledonia were classified into three chemotypes, using principal component analysis (PCA). Of these three chemotypes, found co-occurring in the harvesting locations across the island, chemotype 2, already characterized in Madagascar, is rich in 1,8-cineole (up to 80%) and is widespread (65.4% of the overall samples); chemotype 1 (24.8% of samples) is rich in terpinene derivatives; and chemotype 3 (9.8% of samples) is rich in α α α α α-pinene and viridiflorol.
