The Anticoagulant Action of Polybrene

Abstract: I'he ;inticoagulant action of the heparin antagonist Polybreile has been studied in vitro. Eblybrene was fouild to interfere with the formation of intrinsic blood thrombc~plastin. On exarrlination of the steps in the forrnation of throinboplastin, there was no iilterferer~ce with the production of the intermediate, product I. As this intermediate product is forrned by the interaction of aluminium hydroxide ;idsorbed plasma, serurn, and calcium, Polybrene does not appear to interfere with the interaction of fac… Show more

“…Zipursky and co-workers (40) recently suggested that the anticoagulant properties of another cationic substance, Polybrene, might result from its ability to neutralize the negatively charged phospholipids. Fur-thermore, the report that platelets bear a negative surface charge (41), and the suggestion by Marcus (42,43) that the activity of platelets in clotting may depend upon the platelet membrane, are compatible with this hypothesis.…”
