The anticipatory paradigm

Abstract: Anticipatory thinking is necessary for managing risk in the safety-and missioncritical domains where AI systems are being deployed. We analyze the intersection of anticipatory thinking, the optimization paradigm, and metaforesight to advance our understanding of AI systems and their adaptive capabilities when encountering low-likelihood/high-impact risks. We describe this intersection as the anticipatory paradigm. We detail these challenges in concrete examples and propose new types of anticipatory thinking, t… Show more

“…Amos‐Binks and Dannenhauer (2019) also state that another requirement for successful anticipatory thinking is to have a high recall rate, where the actual future is present in the set of identified possible futures. Priming can provide the context to relate the current situation to future ones, even if they have not been directly connected in the past.…”

“…Although there is a long history of AI research on the ability to plan current and future actions to achieve current active goals, there has been little research on how to implement the overlapping capability of anticipatory thinking (AT)—the ability of autonomous agents to think about alternative futures so as to take action now in preparation for possible future goals and situations (Geden et al. 2018; Amos‐Binks and Dannenhauer 2019). A simple example of AT is when a human decides to bring an umbrella on a trip in case of rain.…”
