The antibacterial and antifungal activity of a soda-lime glass containing silver nanoparticles

Abstract: The antibacterial and antifungal activity of a low melting point soda-lime glass powder containing silver nanoparticles has been studied. Nano-Ag sepiolite fibres containing monodispersed silver nanoparticles (d(50) approximately 11 +/- 9 nm) were used as the source of silver. This powder presents a high antibacterial (against gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria) as well as antifungal (against I. orientalis) activity. The observed high activity against yeast has been explained by considering the inhibitor… Show more

“…The antimicrobial activity of silver nanoparticle depends on its concentration. Silver nanoparticles showed potent antifungal activity against some Candida species at concentrations of 1-7 µg/mL (9). In the present study, the combination of L-PRF and silver nanoparticles presented similar or more effective anti-biofilm formation in the studied microorganisms compared to conventional L-PRF.…”

“…Antifungal and bacterial activities against some clinical isolates and ATCC microorganisms are reported in the literature for silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) (9)(10)(11). Accordingly, the combination of fluconazole with AgNPs enhances the antifungal activity of this agent (11).…”

“…[41] In this sense, we confirm that there is a synergistic effect between silver and calcium as it was reported in a previous work. [39] Calcium inhibits the growth of microorganisms and allows silver nanoparticles to act quickly improving the biocide activity without toxicity in human cells.…”

“…Silver nanoparticles not only affect the fungus hyphae but also the conidial germination. Effi cient antimicrobial activity is shown by copper nanoparticles with soda lime glass powder against gram-negative and gram-positive fungi and bacteria (Esteban-Tejeda et al 2009 ). Silver nanoparticles are effective against M. grisea and B. sorokiniana (Jo et al 2009 ), Fusarium and Phoma (Gajbhiye et al 2009 ).…”
