High Antibacterial and Antifungal Activity of Silver Monodispersed Nanoparticles Embedded in a Glassy Matrix

Abstract: Silver doped glass powders have been obtained starting from vitellinate/nAg and montmorillonite/nAg. These powders have shown a high biocide activity against the three different types of microorganisms studied: Escherichia coli (gram‐negative bacteria), Micrococcus luteus (gram‐positive‐bacteria), and Issatchenkia orientalis (yeast). It was found that these glasses keep constant the silver concentration even below the cytotoxic limit. Therefore we interpret that silver doped glasses play the role of dosing dev… Show more

“…Nano silver is one such example, which is known to attack a broad range of biological processes in microorganisms and disrupt the cell membrane structure and functions (McDonnell and Russell 1999 ;Sondi and Salopek-Sondi 2004 ). It also inhibits gene expression for the proteins associated with ATP production (Yamanaka et al 2005 Gajbhiye et al 2009 ;Esteban-Tejeda et al 2010 ). Besides this, the nano-based products have been used for the control of pumpkin disease and powdery mildew (Lamsal et al 2011 ).…”

“…Nanoparticles have shown to be effective against a verity of plant pathogens and insect pests. Several different formulations of insecticides, pesticides and insect-repelling chemicals are reported (Esteban-Tejeda et al 2010 ;Zahir et al 2012 ). It is now possible to deliver any desired chemical into the plant tissues for eliciting the host plant defence against the pest insects (Torney 2009 ).…”

“…Finally, it has to be mentioned that silver has been also used in its metallic form as coating on glass particles (Wren et al , 2012), or as the dispersed phase within glass matrices (Cabal et al , 2011;Esteban-Tejeda et al , 2010;Claxton et al , 2002;Troczynski and Nicholson, 1990). …”
