The Antibacterial Activity of Compounds Isolated from Oakmoss against Legionella pneumophila and Other Legionella spp.

Abstract: Oakmoss is a natural fragrance ingredient exhibiting highly specific, potent antibacterial activity against Legionella pneumophila, a causative agent of severe water-bone pneumonia. In the present study, the antibacterial activity of individual compounds isolated from oakmoss was investigated against L. pneumophila and other Legionella spp. A total of 18 known compounds and two minor novel compounds (i.e., 3-methoxy-5-methylphenyl-2,4-dihydroxy-6-methylbenzoate (compound 9) and 8-(2,4-dihydroxy-6-(2-oxoheptyl)… Show more

“…Tested compounds were dissolved in sterile, distilled water and diluted to a final concentration of 512 µg/mL in Mueller-Hinton broth (Becton Dickinson, Franklin Lakes, NJ, USA) [42]. Two-fold serially diluted test compounds were dispensed into each of the 96 wells of a standard microdilution plates.…”

“…17 Test compound was dissolved in sterile, distilled water and diluted to a final concentration of 256 µg mL -1 in Mueller-Hinton broth (Becton Dickinson, USA). 18 Two-fold serial dilutions were prepared in a 96-well microtitre plate. Bacterial suspension containing approximately 1 × 10 8 CFU mL -1 were prepared from 24 h agar plates with Mueller Hinton broth.…”
