The Anti-Inflammatory Potential of Mimosa caesalpiniifolia Following Experimental Colitis: Role of COX-2 and TNF-Alpha Expression

Abstract: The aim of this study was to evaluate the preventive and/or protective action of Mimosa caesalpiniifolia (M. caesalpiniifolia) following experimental colitis in rats. The rats were randomized into ten groups (n=10 per group), as follows: G1 - Sham group:; G2 - TNBS group; G3, G4 -colitis and treated with hydroalcoholic extract of M. caesalpiniifolia 250 mg/kg/day after and before/after inducing colitis, respectively; G5, G6 - colitis and treated with hydroalcoholic extract of M. caesalpiniifolia at 125 mg/kg/d… Show more

“…Silva et al [ 166 ] reported on the protective action of HyOH extract and EtOAc fraction of M. caesalpiniifolia leaves in adult male Wistar rats suffering from colitis. The HyOH extract (125 and 250 mg/kg) and EtOAc fraction (25 mg/kg) were able to decrease TNF-α immune expression in rats and were found to be effective at lower doses after inducing colitis.…”

“…The plant extract exhibits cytotoxic activity against the human breast cancer cell line MCF-7 and reduces oxidative DNA damage produced by cadmium . Furthermore, the plant attenuated lesions of the colon, reduced inflammation, and modulated the expression of COX-2 and TNF-α during chronic colitis caused by TNBS acid (2,4,6-trinitrobenzenesulfonic acid) . Preliminary studies on the antifungal effects of an EtOAc extract from the liquid–liquid extraction of the 70% aqueous ethanolic extract of M. caesalpiniifolia Benth.…”

“…In summary, the results suggest that M. caesalpiniifolia attenuated colonic lesions as a result of reduced inflammation (16). The main difference between the previous study and the present one, in addition to the model, is that in this case a pre-formulation was made with the vegetal extract of the plant.…”

“…In a previous study, we found that administration of hydroalcoholic extract of M. caesalpiniifolia at a dose of 125 mg/kg after induction of colitis by TNBS was able to mitigate the harmful effects by decreasing colon inflammatory process through negative regulation of TNF-α expression (16,28). With these findings and to evolve in the development of a plantbased medication, the extract of M. caesalpiniifolia was incorporated into the adjuvant Aerosil®, obtaining the pre-formulation at a promising dose of 125 mg/kg.…”
