“…The potency of MPO inhibition by F105 was further increased 14-fold over BFE alone, from 42 to 2.95 g/mL. A recent study demonstrated the ability of BFE to inhibit colonic MPO activity in the mouse colitis model (Impellizzeri et al 2015). In our own observational trial, ex vivo inhibition of MPO trended from −7.7% to −13% (p > 0.05), respectively, in subjects and subgroup.…”

“…While this fruit is primarily used in the fragrance industry for its essential oil extracted from its peel, recent studies on the juice from the endocarp of bergamot have shown that it has several bioactivities such as antioxidant, antiinflammatory, cytotoxic, neuroprotective, as well as hypolipidemic and hypoglycemic properties (Currò et al 2016;Impellizzeri et al 2015;Miceli et al 2007;Mollace et al 2008;Risitano et al 2014;Sicari et al 2016;Trovato et al 2010;Tundis et al 2012). From clinical and mechanistic studies, it has been proposed (Mollace et al 2011) that melitidine and brutieridine in concert with naringin and other flavonone glycosides might be responsible for the hypolipidemic effects of BFE and function as do the statin drugs through the direct action on 3-hydroxy-3-methyl-glutaryl -coenzyme A (HMG-CoA) reductase activity.…”

“…In addition, although natural remedies are not risk free, they are generally safer than both synthetic and biological drugs. In this context, we have recently shown that BJe has antioxidant properties [235,236] and is able to suppress pro-inflammatory responses in both in vitro [237,238] and in vivo models [239,240]. Interestingly, evidence showing that BJ did not significantly affect the viability of normal human diploid fibroblast WI-38 cells [229], as well as not provoking any apparent sign of systemic toxicity [231], together with its antimicrobial activity [241,242] and favorable safety/efficacy balance [243], reveals the potential of BJe as an anti-cancer remedy, highlighting that it could represent a novel strategic approach in oncology field.…”

“…However, bergamot juice, obtained from the endocarp after essential oils extraction, has long time been considered just a secondary and discarded product of the essential oil industry due to its bitter taste. Recently, it gained attention because of its hypolipemic and hypoglycaemic activity (Mollace et al, 2011), as well as its anti-inflammatory (Impellizzeri et al, 2014; Risitano et al, 2014) and anti-cancer properties (Delle Monache et al, 2013; Navarra et al, 2014; Visalli et al, 2014). …”
