The Anatomy of the Female Gubernaculum Is Different From the Male*

Abstract: The round ligament, or female gubernaculum, is believed to terminate in the labium majorum. In the 30‐week old male foetus, however, the gubernaculum ends outside the external ring, later migrating into the scrotum under androgenic control. We studied the round ligament anatomy in the female to define its position and to see whether it reaches the labium. Post‐mortem examination of 10 females (0–11 years), dying of non‐genital disorders defined the anatomy of the round ligament by dissection and photography. T… Show more

“…It differentiates into the suspensory ligament of the ovary and the round ligament of the uterus, the distal end of which remains attached to the abdominal wall muscle and subcutaneous fascia a t the external ring in the human (Attah & Hutson, 1991). This study shows that the same is true for the adult female mouse.…”

“…A biphasic model for testicular descent was proposed in 1985 (Hutson, 1985) and is gaining increasing support (Fallat et al, 1992; Attah & Hutson, 1991;Wensing, 1988;Hutson, 1986). Transabdominal and inguino-scrota1 phases were proposed to be controlled by separate hormones and mechanisms because descent of the testis was arrested in the inguinal region in mice with complete androgen resistance (TFM) (Hutson, 1986;Hutson & Donahoe, 1986).…”

“…No migration of the round ligament occurs leaving it ending just outside the external ring. 8 The processus vaginalis forms as a small evagination of the peritoneum on the gubernacular mesenchyme at the future superficial inguinal ring. 9 Hollinshead described the round ligament as a flattened band arising from the lateral border of the uterus, immediately below the attachment of the ovarian ligament.…”

“…10 Attah and Hutson observed the gubernaculum in the 30wk old male fetus and found that it ended outside the external ring, later migrating into the scrotum under androgenic control. 8 Anatomy of the round ligament was defined by dissection and photography on post mortem examination of 10 females (0-11yrs) dying of non genital disorders. The round ligament ended just outside the external ring in all females with neither attachment nor extension to the caudal labium.…”

“…Whatever the origin, distal attachment and composition of this structure remain controversial. The round ligament (RL) in females is usually accepted as the postnatal G [1,2,11]. RL is described to lie in the inguinal hernia sac [12], and to course distally within the inguinal canal [11], but the origin, distal attachment and composition of this structure also remain controversial.…”
