The AI Ghostwriter Effect: Users Do Not Perceive Ownership of AI-Generated Text But Self-Declare as Authors

Abstract: Human-AI interaction in text production increases complexity in authorship. In two empirical studies (n1 = 30 & n2 = 96), we investigate authorship and ownership in human-AI collaboration for personalized language generation models. We show an AI Ghostwriter Effect:Users do not consider themselves the owners and authors of AI-generated text but refrain from publicly declaring AI authorship. The degree of personalization did not impact the AI Ghostwriter Effect, and control over the model increased participants'… Show more

“…Researchers also studied how specific designs of LLM, such as the number of suggestions [13] or allowing users to input instructional prompts or not [25] can impact writing. Moreover, the researchers investigated the sense of ownership of writings with AI suggestions [28]. However, AI suggestions were not the only approach to support human writing.…”

“…Finally, we inquired about the frequency of AI use that our participants perform in their workplace, using a 4-item scale, adapted from Draxler et al (2023), e.g., "I use Artificial Intelligence to find new perspectives to resolve conflict in the workplace" with their answers spanning between 1 = very rarely/almost never to 7 = very often. Cronbach's α = 0.97.…”

“…In [4], the authors examined how human writers work together with ML models in fantasy writing, by prototyping a human-AI collaborative writing software that enables human authors to condense, edit, summarize, and revive AI-generated text, then used "finish each other's story" strategy to explore the dynamics of human-AI collaboration. In [5], the authorship and ownership of human-AI writers are studied for the personalized LLMs. They demonstrated AI ghostwriter influence, in which the users did not regard themselves as the authors or owners of AIgenerated text but desisted from openly proclaiming AI authorship.…”
