The mechanical characteristics of a fibre-resin composite depend primarily on the mechanical properties of the combined materials, the surface of the fibre, the nature of the fibre-resin bonding as well as the mode of stress transfer at the interface. These two last points are related to the surface properties of the fibres. The various types of bonding that may occur between fibrous materials (carbon, glass and organic fibres) and organic polymers, including the relevant theories, are briefly reviewed. In order to optimize the fibre-resin interactions, it is often essential that the interface should be chemically modified. The various possible treatments may be classified under three headings: chemical surface modification of the fibre, sizing and polymer fixation (grafting). The major factors that influence the interactions between high-performance fibres and organic resins will be established and discussed, as illustrated in a few selected examples.

SynopsisVarious compounds were used for the surface treatment of aramid fibers in order to promote adhesion t o polymeric matrices. The improvement of adhesive bond could be based either on the roughness of fiber surface or on chemical modification introduced by grafting. The compounds used are more or less reactive to the secondary amide groups, present on the aramid chain. Thus, the fibers were impregnated with acetic acid anhydride, sulfuric acid-acrylamide, and methacryloyl chloride. The effect of such treatment was first evaluated by optical microscopy and infrared analysis. Tensile measurements were also carried out in order to define any changes of strength and modulus. Finally, tensile specimens were prepared using unsaturated polyester reinforced with aramid fibers and the effect of chemical treatment on the tensile strength was determined. From the above study, methacryloyl chloride was proved an effective coupling agent with possible grafting to aramid fibers.

SynopsisThermoplastic polyurethane is a relatively new development in the elastomers field, combining elastomeric behavior with thermoplastic processing characteristics. Thus, high production rates and reduced scrap can be achieved but, increased versatility for the incorporation of additives is also possible. In this work, thermoplastic polyurethane matrices were prepared and Kevlar pulp w a s dispersed as a reinforcing agent. Since good dispersion and appropriate filler volume fraction are critical factors for a reinforcing effect, special attention was paid to the optimization of these parameters. Thermoplastic polyurethanes were prepared by mixing a low melting polyol with a low melting diisocyanate and the subsequent addition of small amounts of a chain extender, namely, a low molecular weight diol such as 1,4 butanediol. The Kevlar pulp was added under stimng either in the polyol or the diisocyanate melt. This incorporation technique allows the dispersion of small fiber percentages. Thus, calendering of the materials prepared was also performed and additional fibers were incorporated. Changes in the properties of the specimens prepared as a function of the filler volume fraction and the dispersion technique were determined, taking into consideration the possibilities of chemical interaction between fibers and matrix.
