The Adaptive Significance of Egg Attendance in a South‐East Asian Tree Frog

Abstract: The arboreal frog, Chiromantis hansenae (Family: Rhacophoridae), is one of only a handful of South‐East Asian amphibian species reported with parental care. We present the first systematic observational and experimental study confirming offspring benefits as a result of this care, which has a number of unusual life‐history characteristics. Eggs are unusually small, breeding takes place in large pools, and females attend the eggs. Field observations and an adult removal experiment demonstrated a critical contri… Show more

“…Behaviors such as egg attendance and brooding have been repeatedly linked with egg survival in a wide range of gel-nesting species (Vockenhuber et al 2009, Poo and Bickford 2013, Delia et al 2013. Post-fertilization parental care has been recorded in approximately one tenth of frog species worldwide (Lehtinen and Nussbaum 2003).…”

“…Amphibians are more sensitive to environmental toxins or to changes in patterns of temperature or rainfall than are other terrestrial vertebrate (Alford & Richards 1999), thus making them more susceptible to environmental stressor. In addition, some of the peculiar life-history characteristics of amphibian such as parental care, breeding behaviour, and various kinds of larva development are under studied especially in Southeast Asia (Poo & Bickford 2013). In fact, this information is essential to enhance our understanding of the ecological and evolutionary significance of amphibians in general.…”
