The acute effects of single cup of coffee on ocular biometric parameters in healthy subjects

Abstract: PurposeTo evaluate ocular biometric changes in healthy subjects after caffeine consumption from a cup of coffee.MethodsA total of 36 subjects were included in this prospective observational study. Axial length (AL) and anterior segment parameters including aqueous depth (AD), anterior chamber depth (ACD), lens thickness (LT), and central corneal thickness (CCT) were measured with optic biometry, Lenstar LS 900 (Haag-Streit, Inc., Koeniz, Switzerland) before and 1 and 4 h after ingesting a cup of coffee (60 mg … Show more

“…This finding was consistent across different caffeine dosages including 200, 58,59,61 60 62 and 57 mg 60 . Caffeine causes retinal vasoconstriction by antagonizing adenosine receptors, 62 and could potentially cause vasoconstriction in the choroid through a similar mechanism 94 . No adverse reactions specific to the choroid have been reported.…”

“…Caffeine can be administered occasionally or chronically. Caffeine intake causes a significant decrease in CT lasting at least 3–4 hours and returning to baseline after 6 hours 58–62 . This finding was consistent across different caffeine dosages including 200, 58,59,61 60 62 and 57 mg 60 .…”
