Citrus fruits stand as pivotal and extensively cultivated fruit crops on a global scale, boasting substantial economic and nutritional significance. Despite their paramount importance, citrus growers and the industry face a formidable obstacle in the form of post-harvest losses caused by plant pathogens. Effectively addressing this challenge has become imperative. The predominant approach to tackle these pathogens has traditionally involved the use of chemical fungicides. However, the escalating environmental concerns associated with chemical interventions, coupled with a growing consumer preference for pesticide-free produce, have catalyzed an earnest quest for alternative methods of disease control in the citrus industry. The antagonistic yeasts hold great promise as biocontrol agents for mitigating post-harvest fungal diseases in citrus. In this regard, this review summarizes the current state of knowledge regarding the study of yeast strains with biocontrol potential. Thus, the various modes of action employed by these yeasts and their effectiveness against prominent citrus pathogens such as Penicillium digitatum, Penicillium italicum and Geotrichum citri were discussed. Additionally, the review delved into the challenges associated with the practical implementation of yeast-based biocontrol strategies in citrus post-harvest management and investigated the potential of yeast-based approaches to enhance the safety and quality of citrus produce, while reducing the reliance on chemical fungicides and contributing to the sustainable and environmentally responsible future of the citrus industry.

Considering the importance of citriculture for the country, this segment of Brazilian agribusiness faces phytosanitary problems that affect quantity and quality of the fruits, reducing nutritional and market values. Fungi are considered the main cause of fruit losses in the post-harvest, and the main diseases that affect citrus are: blue mold (Penicillium italicum), green mold (P. digitatum) and sour rot (Geotrichum citri-aurantii). Chemical control using Imazalil is the most effective method for controlling molds, however, its excessive and indiscriminate use has led to the proliferation of resistant strains, in addition to the persistence of residues of this fungicide on the fruits. Although the fungicides guazatine and propiconazole control the sour rot, they are only registered in countries in Europe, South Africa and Australia. Our review deals with the use of yeasts as biological control agents as an alternative to chemical control, covering: (i) their main mechanisms of action, such as competition for space and nutrients; (ii) production of siderophores; (iii) biofilm formation; (iv) production of antifungal compounds, hydrolytic enzymes and killer toxin; (v) mycoparasitism; and (vi) resistance induction. Green mold is one of the main diseases in citrus fruits caused by Penicillium digitatum. One of the managements that can be used to control this disease is by using yeasts as antagonistic agents. The objective of this study was to evaluate the ability of yeast to suppress Green mold caused by P. digitatum in siam citrus (Citrus nobilis Lour.). The study was conducted using a completely randomized design. The treatments were the application of yeast, consisting of Aureobasidium pullulans isolate Dmg 11 DEP, Rhodotorula minuta isolate Dmg 16 BE, Candida tropicalis isolate Lm 13 BE, fungicide benomyl, and control. The results showed that A. pullulans isolate Dmg 11 DEP, C. tropicalis isolate Lm 13 BE, and R. minuta isolate Dmg 16 BE were able to suppress the growth of P. digitatum in vitro on dual culture method, with suppression levels ranged from 14.64%-21.02%. The greatest suppression was caused by R. minuta isolate Dmg 16 BE. The formation of volatile compounds test results were ranged from 14.51%-34%, and the highest suppression was on C. tropicalis isolate Lm 13 BE. Application of the yeasts on siam citrus fruit was able to reduce the pathogen's growth, and the suppressions were 28.87% to 68.72%. R. minuta isolate Dmg 16 BE caused the highest suppression.
