The action of low dose endotoxin on equine bowel motility

Abstract: Summary Post operative ileus (POI) is a common and serious complication of colic surgery in the horse. There is a high correlation between the incidence of POI and the presence of ischaemic bowel, suggesting a role for endotoxin. 0.1μg/kg endotoxin was administered intravenously to six ponies with chronically implanted gastrointestinal electromechanical recording devices. It produced profound disruption of normal fasting bowel motility patterns, with an inhibition of gastric contraction amplitude and rate, lef… Show more

“…1 Endotoxemia, excessive distension of the intestine, peritoneal inflammation or irritation, and ischemia or inflammation of the intestinal wall have been cited as causes for adynamic ileus. [1][2][3][4][5][6][7] The actual mechanisms responsible for the development of adynamic ileus are not fully understood, although several studies suggest that nociceptive stimulation of the peritoneum inhibits gastrointestinal motility by the activation of inhibitory reflexes. 8 Several therapeutic agents have been used, with variable success, to prevent and treat POI in other species.…”

“…In horses, fermentation takes place in the intestine with considerable activity by the intestinal flora [8,9], and 16% of the total amount of H2 generated is, then, discharged from the lungs [2]. In the case of acute abdomen, such as ileus, meteorism results from a discontinuation of intestinal motility, leading to abnormal generation of gas due to bacterial overgrowth [4,10]. Thus, measurement of breath concentrations of H2 and CH4 is useful in diagnosis of acute abdomen such as ileus or colic because it provides an effective indicator of bacterial growth.…”

“…In such an approach, injury incurred during the ischemic phase is mild, compared with the reperfusion injury that follows . The clinical equivalent to the low-flow model could be small intestine subjected to distention and decompression (Dabareiner et al 2001, Faleiros et al 2008 or to endotoxin-induced hypoperfusion (King and Gerring et al 1991). Because these segments are left in situ after removal of the strangulated tissue, progressive damage to them could delay return of gastrointestinal function and barrier integrity.…”
