Due to high metal prices and increased difficulties in finding shallower deposits, the exploration for and exploitation of mineral resources is expected to move to greater depths. Consequently, seismic methods will become a more important tool to help unravel structures hosting mineral deposits at great depth for mine planning and exploration. These methods also can be used with varying degrees of success to directly target mineral deposits at depth. We review important contributions that have been made in developing these techniques for the mining industry with focus on four main regions: Australia, Europe, Canada, and South Africa. A wide range of case studies are covered, including some that are published in the special issue accompanying this article, from surface to borehole seismic methods, as well as petrophysical data and seismic modeling of mineral deposits. At present, high-resolution 2D surveys mostly are performed in mining areas, but there is a general increasing trend in the use of 3D seismic methods, especially in mature mining camps.

This petrographic study of rock samples from the area of a large-scale shear zone, the Sottung-Jurmo shear zone, in SW Finland, illuminates the thermal development of and strain distribution within the rocks during the last development stages of the shear zone. The results indicate relatively high temperatures during the deformation phases that created the gneisses and the mylonites, strain partitioning through time and continued transpression from S-SW until at least c. 1.79 Ga. This has implications to the latest tectonic models since the results together with previous studies suggest a compartmentalisation of regional stresses between the area SW of the shear zone and central Fennoscandia. The results also suggest that the uplift rate increased during the late stage of the transpression.

Zircons from a felsic volcanic rock in the Toija Formation and a synvolcanic gabbro intrusion in the Salittu Formation within the Orijärvi area were dated by U-Th-Pb SIMS in order to provide depositional constraints on these formations. Zircon crystals from the felsic rock preserve a two-stage crystallisation history with zoned core domains and homogeneous rim domains. Inner domains yield a 1878 ± 4 Ma concordia age, interpreted to determine the crystallisation of this rock. Rims yield a 1815 ± 3 Ma concordia age interpreted to determine the regional metamorphism. Small rounded zircon grains from the Salittu gabbro, located within the Jyly shear zone, yield a concordia age of 1792 ± 5 Ma. We interpret the grain textures to suggest that they recrystallised from inherited zircon seeds during the heat and fluid flow into the shear zone. Although no direct ages for the Salittu Formation have been recovered, field relationships imply that it was deposited between 1878 − 1875 Ma.
