The problem of controlling half bridge single phase unity power factor rectifier circuit is considered. The control objectives are to achieve i) output regulation and ii) near unity power factor in the presence of an uncertain load. The considered problem is dealt with using a double-loop controller developed on the basis of the system nonlinear model. The inner-loop is designed using Lyapunov technique to cope with the PFC issue. The outer-loop is designed to regulate the converter output voltage. The obtained regulator is shown to meet its objectives namely a tight output voltage regulation, a power factor correction, and robustness with respect to load changes. The proposed controller has been simulated using MATLAB-SIMULINK environment to illustrate its features.Index terms ─ Nonlinear control, Lyapunov stability, AC-DC power conversion, power factor correction. 2014 European Control Conference (ECC) June 24-27, 2014. Abstract-This paper discusses the basic construction procedure and topological possibilities of creating ac/dc converters out of simple dc/dc converters. It is shown that two separately controlled dc/dc converters are sufficient for producing a regulated dc output and shaping the input current, from an ac voltage source, without the need for input rectifiers. Some design constraints are discussed, emanating from the limitation of the conversion ratios that can be achieved by particular dc/dc converters. Selected topologies are verified experimentally. This kind of rectifierless converters find applications in airborne power supplies where zero-crossing distortions are significant because of the inevitable phase-lead effect of the input rectifier bridge.
