Synthesis of Input-Rectifierless AC/DC Converters

Abstract: Abstract-This paper discusses the basic construction procedure and topological possibilities of creating ac/dc converters out of simple dc/dc converters. It is shown that two separately controlled dc/dc converters are sufficient for producing a regulated dc output and shaping the input current, from an ac voltage source, without the need for input rectifiers. Some design constraints are discussed, emanating from the limitation of the conversion ratios that can be achieved by particular dc/dc converters. Select… Show more

“…In this paper, we propose a PFC converter topology that can eradicate the distortions described above. This topology is derived from the general synthesis procedure for rectifierless ac-dc conversion topologies presented in Liu et al [5]. dc-dc converters to provide a dc stacking voltage to the ac input voltage, thereby preventing polarity change of the input voltage and hence eliminating the need for input rectifiers.…”

“…Clearly, no impedance can be synthesized with one converter terminated with a fixed load impedance because (2) can never be satisfied. 4 Thus, one switching converter is insufficient. Clearly, we need to balance the power by ensuring that the output of the converter "emits" the right amount of instantaneous power.…”
