The ABC taxonomy for medication adherence translated into French and German

Abstract: Aims We translated the ABC adherence taxonomy (i.e. 7 terms and their corresponding definitions) published by Vrijens et al. (2012) into French and German without changing the original meaning with the aim to promote a standardised taxonomy for medication adherence to French‐ and German‐speaking researchers and clinicians. Methods A Delphi survey was performed. To generate round 1, we identified French and German synonyms for the 7 adherence terms through a literature search in PubMed. Investigators translated… Show more

“… 141 , 142 Medication adherence is multifaceted and composed of 3 distinct phases: 1) initiation, which is when a patient takes the first dose of a prescribed medication; 2) implementation, the extent to which a patient’s actual dosing corresponds with the prescribed regimen from initiation until the last dose; and 3) persistence, which is the time period between initiation and when a patient stops taking a prescribed medication (discontinuation). 143 , 144 , 145 , 146 , 147 Each of these phases warrants specific attention and support to ensure optimal benefit from the prescribed medication ( Table 2 ).…”

“…Thanks to the growing interest in the ABC Taxonomy in scientific research and to its implications for improving medication adherence in daily practice, the ABC Taxonomy may be considered a promising and useful model to conceptualize and study medication adherence [ 22 , 23 ]. The Taxonomy was first published in English and subsequently translated into French and German with the aim of harmonizing terminology across languages and further increasing comparability in scientific research [ 24 ]. Thus, it is necessary to increase the number of languages in which to standardize and validate the terminology related to medication adherence, with the ultimate goal of eradicating ambiguity in adherence research.…”

“…Further, an aggregate estimate obscures the variability of refills over time i.e., the dynamic of medication adherence. Such inaccuracy deviates from consensus-based guidelines' advice on best practice in defining medication adherence (ABC-Taxonomy) [14,15] or reporting of empirical studies (EMERGE-guidelines) [16]. According to these new recommendations, medication adherence research should specify the medication adherence phases under scrutiny, that is, initiation, implementation, or discontinuation.…”
