BackgroundNew establishments frequently face challenges. Pharmacy is integral to healthcare delivery institutes, and inventory management is crucial. The present study investigated the problems faced by the pharmacy of a newly established health institute and proposed relevant solutions to identify drugs needing stringent management control. MethodsResponses were collected from seven pharmacists for questionnaires focusing on pharmacy problems and possible solutions. Always better control (ABC), vital essential desirable (VED), and ABC-VED matrix analysis were done on the drugs dispensed during the financial 2022-23. ResultsThe predominant challenges identified were stockouts and shortages, expiry of medications, and supplierrelated issues. The causes were mainly related to rural location, communication hurdles, and vendor management. Proposed solutions were integrating patients' electronic health records and bar code technology with the pharmacy's inventory management system, conducting pharmacy knowledge and skills upgradation sessions every six months, adopting ABC and VED analysis, and first-in first-out (FIFO), justin-time (JIT). Community development elderly is a community managed by the non-government organization (NGO) with obtaining the funding from several sources involving government, donations and own community. Currently, there are many activities related to physical fitness for elderly people such as gymnastics, physical leisure activities, and other social activities. Nevertheless, older adults have many threats of illness that could have appeared suddenly. Thus, it needs a series of activities to prevent the emergence of disease. This study aims to determine appropriate programs of older adults based on illness complaints through analyzing the medicine inventory. This study combined ABC and VED analysis of inventory model in supporting healthcare consulting services for a community development elderly in Indonesia. The application ABC analysis found some item from three categories consisting category A of 33 items, category B of 26 items and Category C of 26 items. Then, VED analysis classification of medicine into seven items of Vital, 12 items of Essential and 12 items of Desirable. Thus, the result of a healthcare consulting service was obtained that older adults needed 31 types of medicines. The finding of this study also showed that the high frequency of illness complaints from older adults related to problems of Neurological, Hypertension, and Musculoskeletal. The implication of this study proved that the community development elderly must consider providing the priority programs of healthcare consulting services focus on three main problems of older adults. Further study is suggested to implement safety stock and reorder point for providing medicine inventory.

Analysis of pharmaceutical inventory management in a state hospital in Myanmar

Inventory management (IM) analysis in a state-level hospital pharmacy of Myanmar was done by using qualitative and quantitative analysis to classify the drug categories that require different levels of management control. Workflow analysis was qualitatively conducted using in-depth interviews of pharmacists. The annual expenditure consumed on each drug of pharmacy for the years 2016 and 2017 was analyzed and application of ABC, VEN, ABC-VEN matrix analysis was performed. The study showed a lack of classification for drug procurement, monitoring, and reporting. There was a lack of appropriate communication between hospital and central procurement, shortage of pharmacists, lack of training about IM, and manually stock record in sub-stories. The study showed that the average annual expenditure was 474,698,280.76 kyats. Of the total 297 medicines, 7.74% (23), 16.84% (50), and 75.42% (224) items were found to be A, B, and C category items respectively costing 70.43%, 19.66%, and 9.91% of drug expenditure. The VEN analysis revealed that 35% (105), 45% (133), and 20% (59) items as Vital, Essential, and Non-essential category items respectively, accounting for 65%, 32%, and 3% of drug expenditure. On ABC-VEN matrix analysis, drugs were group into Category I (38%), Category II (43.1%), and Category III (18.9%) accounting for 84.48%, 14.12%, and 1.4% of drug expenditure. Category I medicines are needed to be controlled strictly whereas Category II and Category III medicines need middle and lower-level management respectively. ABC-VEN classification techniques should be used for efficient resources utilization and elimination of wastage and stock-out situations in hospital pharmacies. Pharmacist resources planning, and training, stock record with IT, appropriate coordination between two sources of procurement should be considered.
