The 5G EVE End-to-End 5G Facility for Extensive Trials

Abstract: The challenge before reaching the production stage for 5G is to assess its performance in large-scale facilities. EU-funded 5G PPP project 5G EVE is addressing this challenge by building a distributed and interworking 5G endto-end facility in Europe across various sites. In this paper we explain the architecture of the 5G EVE end-to-end facility and present each site with their respective features, including the interworking among them, which provides a clear add-on to country-based trials. The 5G EVE site fac… Show more

“…The first pillar comprises a pre-commercial Nokia 4G/5G E2E network facility composed of the pre-commercial 5G platform based on open-source and inner-source products developed by Nokia's Mobile Networks Business Unit located in Paris-Saclay. The second pillar consists of Open Source building blocks, mainly based on OpenAirInterface TM (see [7]) and distributed across several facilities. One of these is elements is the Plug-in platform, which is operated by Orange in Châtillon/Paris.…”

“…Users have full control over the selection and configuration of components in their virtual customer test-bed. 5G EVE (5G European Validation platform for Extensive trials) [18] supports validation trials on the stateof-the art 5G technologies: Multi-user multiple-input and multiple-output (MIMO), Massive MIMO, Radio Access Network (RAN) virtualization, latency reduction, intelligent connectivity [17]. The 5th Generation (5G) e2e Network, Experimentation, System Integration, and Showcasing project (5GENESIS) [19], [20] validates 5G key performance indicators (KPIs) for various 5G use cases, in both controlled set-ups and large-scale events.…”

“…The INITIATE test-network allows experimenters to use this cross-country infrastructure to deploy and try out their solutions and PoCs (Proof of Concepts). Unlike most of the established test-beds [15], [18], the INITIATE test-network does not focus on a specific technology; instead it allows multiple technologies to inter-operate in a seamless manner. All the test sites are connected through the INITIATE network, which provides a plethora of choices to users for experimentation and use cases deployment.…”

“…Triggered by the complexity and novelty of 5G, several research initiatives have started to gather an understanding of the envisioned features of these types of networks. In this way, 5G EVE [4] is a European project that is deploying a validation 5G multi-site platform, involving four main facilities located in Spain, Italy, France, and Greece, where verticals and other projects can execute extensive trials. After an initial phase where verticals have provided their requirements (reported in [5]), the project presented in [6] the proposed architecture and the main innovation areas addressed, including the KPI Framework for performance diagnosis.…”
