The 3ω technique for measuring dynamic specific heat and thermal conductivity of a liquid or solid

Abstract: We show how to measure dynamic specific heat and thermal conductivity of a solid or liquid sample using the 3ω technique, which is an ac-modulation method where we use a heater simultaneously as the sensor. By varying the width of the heater relative to the thermal decay length, one can choose the proper regime to measure thermal conductivity or specific heat. The technique is applied to window glass and the results confirm the validity of the method. Experimental results for potassium dihydrogen phosphate cry… Show more

“…This may originate from the capacitive effect of the connecting wires [22]. This will affect the specific heat value (planar regime) [23] but does not change the linear part used to determined the thermal conductivity. We have performed integral calculations using Simpson quadrature combined with simplex or non linear parameter estimation methods to find thermal properties of Alq3 thin film and substrate. We did not use the differential method to determine the thermal conductivity of the thin film because of a problem of parallelism between in phase diagrams obtained with and without the film.…”

“…The 3ω technique, introduced for the first time by Cahill, has been widely used for the characterization of dielectric thin films (Cahill, 1990;Franck et al, 1993;Moon et al, 1996). The adaptation of the method for liquids is relatively recent (Chen et al, 2004;Heyd et al, 2008;Oh et al, 2008;S.…”

“…Also, Moon and Jeong [7] and Birge [8] used the 3ω voltage to measure the heat capacities of liquids near the glass-transition temperature. Lee [9] measured the thermal conductivity of air with the three-omega method based on the solution of Chen et al [10] which includes wire properties.Studies related to application of the three-omega method to measurement of gas-phase properties are very scarce in the literature.…”
