Summary
Foecal diagnosis of bovine syngamosis in Ecuador and a note of the likely efficacy of Tetramisole
The eggs of Syngamus laryngeus as found in the faeces of cattle in Ecuador measured 93.6 ± 5.0 μ × 52.7 ± 1.02 μ, have a thick pale yellow shell (4–4.6 μ) and normally contain two blastomeres.
These eggs do not correspond to the classical descriptions of them, which is why there has been doubt expressed as to the identity of the asiatic parasite with that found in South America. It may be that it is a different species of Syngamus, probably S. nasicola.
Ripercol (Tetramisole) at a level of 5 mg./kg. of active material produced complete disappearance of the eggs within three days in one calf and almost complete disappearance in four others. An autopsy on one animal showed almost complete efficacy of the drug. Other levels of dosage are being investigated.
