Tetanus Vaccination and Extra-Immunization among Adult Populations: Eight-Year Follow Up Cohort Study of 771,443 Adults in Taiwan, 2006–2013

Abstract: Under-and extra-immunization of tetanus boosters are important issues to consider in reducing the burden of vaccine-preventable disease in adults. The present study aimed to analyze the trend of vaccination coverage (VC) and risk factors associated with extra-immunization of tetanus during an 8-year period using a national-scale cohort database. Taiwan’s one-million representative research database, the Longitudinal Health Insurance Database (LHID2005) was used. A total of 771,443 adults aged between 20 and 79… Show more

“…Therefore, it was suggested that childhood vaccination alone could protect sufficiently against tetanus and diphtheria [ 13 , 14 ]. However, the question of having ongoing booster shots is really more complicated than only considering the frequency of a disease [ 13 , 15 ]. Although there has been a lack of change in tetanus incidence, other factors could strongly affect the number of cases, including wound management, the amount of bacteria in the environment, and hygiene measures.…”

“…The tetanus vaccine is considered by the WHO as being very safe, also for HIV patients and immuno-depressed individuals [ 17 ]. The data from the serological studies show that in order to obtain prolonged protection, at least 5 doses are needed, and this vaccination seems to be less effective in those older than 60 years old due to a lower activity of the cellular immunity mediated by T lymphocytes [ 6 , 18 , 19 ]. Tetanus antitoxin antibodies titers of at least 0.01–0.2 IU/mL are considered good levels of protection, as determined in serum through a standard ELISA test.…”
