Tests for the absorption of 75Se-labelled homocholic acid conjugated with taurine (75Se-HCAT)

Abstract: The absorption of selenomethionine Se 75-labelled homocholic acid conjugated with taurine (75-SE-HCAT) was tested in 46 patients. Retention measurements using (1) an uncollimated gamma camera and (2) a measuring arrangement similar to a human-body counter were compared in order to obtain a quantitative assessment of the absorption capacity of the terminal ileum for bile acids. The retention curve obtained after the oral administration of the 75Se-labelled bile-acid analogue showed a monoexponential decline; in… Show more

“…However, as in previous reports (Schroth et al 1985), severe bile acid malabsorption and greatly decreased VSSe-HCAT retention times were associated with ileal resection. In summary, measuring ileal function with the 7SSe-HCAT test and 14C-glycochol breath test is a reliable procedure for documenting late radiation damage of the small intestine.…”

“…Data from Schroth et al [13] suggest that for this group a value of less than 2% is considered abnormal. Several authors have found that all patients in this group have retention values of less than 10% [1,[6][7][8]12].…”
