Testing Zimbardo’s Stanford Time Perspective Inventory (STPI) - Short Form

Abstract: In the present study the psychometric properties of the Stanford Time Perspective Inventory (STPI - short version) are assessed in an Italian sample. Factorial analysis of STPI items was performed on 1507 respondents (965 women and 542 men). Results showed a clear correspondence between factorial components and a priori hypothesized dimensions by evidencing three factors (Future, Hedonistic Present, Fatalistic Present). Italian translation of the STPI indicates a fair degree of internal consistency and good me… Show more

“…This time perspective provides the framework to select and pursue short and long-term goals, and we could distinguish between five time perspective dimensions: past-negative, past-positive, present-hedonistic, present-fatalistic and future . Negative correlation was found between age and the present-hedonistic dimension (Hamilton, Kives, Micevski, & Grace, 2003), while positive between age and the present-fatalistic dimension (D'Alessio, Guarino, De Pascalis, & Zimbardo, 2003).…”

“…Gender differences in risk perception could be at least partially attributed to gender socialization (Davidson & Freudenburg, 1996), the fact that women have less power and control (Finucane, Slovic, Mertz, Flynn, & Satterfield, 2000), but also to differences in the time perspective since women are more prone to the present-fatalistic perspective (D'Alessio et al, 2003), past-positive perspective and to the future perspective and less prone to the present--hedonistic perspective (Keough, Zimbardo, & Boyd, 1999;Zimbardo, Keough, & Boyd, 1997).…”

“…Zimbardo developed the Stanford Time Perspective Inventory (STPI) test, which provides a straightforward way of measuring multiple time perspectives as individual temporal profiles. As summarized in a later study (D'Alessio, Guarino, De Pascalis & Zimbardo, 2003), the STPI test addressed shortcomings of the above-mentioned one-dimensional scales by providing consistent evaluation of various dimensions within individual temporal profiles. Because of that, the STPI test has gained a widespread acceptance in psychology as a standard measure of personal characteristics concerning time perspective with clearly distinguished psychometric properties and a potential of application in diverse research paradigms.…”
