Ornamental peppers have a significant economic importance in the national and international markets; however, few cultivars intended for this purpose are grown in Brazil. The objective of this study was to select partially inbred lines (PIL) of peppers with ornamental potential, based on quantitative and qualitative variables with high heritability. The study was conducted over six generations for 4 consecutive years, using the single seed descent method. The last phase (VI) consisted of growing plants of the F5 generation for selection. Qualitative (LD) and quantitative (QD) descriptors were considered and the ideal genotypes were defined. The statistical analyses consisted of estimating variance components and genetic parameters and predicting genetic values, using REML/BLUP for QD, except for cycle to flowering (CF) and cycle to maturation (CM), which were analysed qualitatively. Therefore, CF and CM were analysed through frequency distribution of continuous variables within class intervals. Descriptive statistics were used to evaluate LD. The results showed that residual values exceeded genetic values, resulting in low heritability for QD, and therefore, they were not considered for PIL selection. Regarding LD, genetic variability was found among the population genotypes for all evaluated descriptors. The selection based on ideal genotypes enabled the selection of 82 PIL with LD of high ornamental value, which differ from the materials already available on the market. The selected genotypes will be used for developing future generations until allele fixation, focussed on subsequent selection of candidate lines for new ornamental pepper cultivars.

Being capable of accurately predicting morphological parameters of the plant weeks before achieving fruit maturation is of great importance in the production and selection of suitable ornamental pepper plants. The objective of this article is evaluating the feasibility and assessing the performance of CNN-based models using RGB images as input to forecast two morphological parameters: plant height and canopy diameter. To this end, four CNN-based models are proposed to predict these morphological parameters in four different scenarios: first, using as input a single image of the plant; second, using as input several images from different viewpoints of the plant acquired on the same date; third, using as input two images from two consecutive weeks; and fourth, using as input a set of images consisting of one image from each week up to the current date. The results show that it is possible to accurately predict both plant height and canopy diameter. The RMSE for a forecast performed 6 weeks in advance to the actual measurements was below 4.5 cm and 4.2 cm, respectively. When information from previous weeks is added to the model, better results can be achieved and as the prediction date gets closer to the assessment date the accuracy improves as well.

Genetic variability and interaction between variables of ornamental interest in a segregating pepper population

The diversity in the Capsicum genus and the low number of ornamental pepper cultivars available have stimulate the development of breeding programs for this species. The study of segregating populations is important to obtain ornamental pepper cultivars. The objective of this work was to detect the variability in a F2 pepper population through principal component analysis (PCA) considering characters of interest of ornamental peppers and identify which variables affect the height of these ornamental plants through trail analysis. A crossing between two contrasting materials followed by self-fertilization of the F1 population was carried out and seven variables of ornamental interest were evaluated in 333 plants of the F2 generation. The evaluated variables were: mean fruit weight (MFW), mean fruit length (MFL), mean fruit diameter (MFD), mean peduncle length (MPL), mean pericarp thickness (MPT), plant height (PH), and flowering cycle (FC). The results were subjected to principal component analysis and trail analysis using PH as the base characteristic. The two first components explained 90% of the genetic variability of the population; PH and FC together reached 96.9%; and FC alone was responsible for 62.1%. The trail analysis showed that PH is more affected by the FC (24.35%) and MPL (16.6%); increases in these variables may increase PH. MFD presented a low-magnitude negative effect on the base variable (-1.99%). MFW, MFL, and MPT presented low effect on PH, 0.35%, 0.76%, and 7.06%, respectively. A genetic variability that can be explored in breeding programs was detected in the segregating population of ornamental pepper evaluated, mainly for FC and PH. Despite FC and MPL affect positively the plant height, this effect has a low magnitude.
