In order to systematically shift existing control and management paradigms in distribution systems to new interoperable communication supported schemes in smart grids, we need to map newly developed use cases to standard reference models like Smart Grid Architecture Model (SGAM). From the other side, any new use cases should be tested and validated ex-ante before being deployed in the real-world system. Considering various types of actors in smart grids, use cases are usually tested using co-simulation platforms. Currently, there is no efficient co-simulation platform which supports interoperability analysis based on SGAM. In this paper, we present our developed test platform which offers a support to design new use cases based on SGAM. We used this platform to develop a new scheme for wide area monitoring of existing distribution systems under growing penetration of Photovoltaic production. Off-the-shelf solutions of state estimation for wide area monitoring are either used for passive distribution grids or applied to the active networks with wide measurement of distributed generators. Our proposed distribution state estimation algorithm does not require wide area measurements and relies on the data provided by a PV simulator we developed. This practical scheme is tested experimentally on a realistic urban distribution grid. The monitoring results shows a very low error rate of about 1 % by using our PV simulator under high penetration of PV with about 30 % error of load forecast. Using our SGAM-based platform, we could propose and examine an Internet-of-Things-based infrastructure to deploy the use case.

This study proposes an IEC 61850 based protection scheme to maintain the generator synchronous operation and prevent its tripping by the pole slipping protection (Relay 78) during system disturbances while the transmission line distance protection (R TL) is blocked from operation. The scheme has been studied during common system disturbances, namely sudden load applications. This scheme could maintain the synchronous operation of the local generator and enable it to support the system during and after such disturbances; therefore, maintaining the system stability. A real recorded incidence of generator tripping by Relay 78 in the Egyptian grid is investigated and a new scheme to prevent such tripping during system disturbances is introduced. The new scheme takes the advantage of using IEC 61850 communication standard in coordinating the tripping role between Relay 78 and R TL. This scheme can be applied based on the current technologies of protection relays. The scheme is modeled and simulated using MATLAB ® Software and Xelas IEC 61850 simulator. The simulated system is configured according to the typical parameters of the Egyptian national grid 220 kV. Satisfactory results have proved the scheme effectiveness.

The main task of the "relay" protection system is to provide trip commands in case of faults and to prevent the operation of the electrical equipment in dangerous modes. The set of the protection functions and the system structure have an impact on the reliability and respectively dependability of the protected structure. In some smaller node-point electrical facilities like step-up substations for PVPPs and wind-farms, the set of protection functions required by the respective regulations can be limited. The multifunctional features of new generations of Intelligent Electronic Devices (IEDs) and the options to use IEC 61850 based communication, protection and automation, provide opportunities for improvement of the busbar protection system.
