Testing and evaluating real driving emissions with PEMS

Abstract: Testing of real driving emissions (RDE) with portable emission measuring system (PEMS) in an appropriate road circuit became an obligatory element of new type approval of passenger cars since September 2017. In several projects the Laboratory for Exhaust Emissions Control (AFHB) of the Berne University of Applied Sciences (BFH) performed comparisons on passenger cars with different PEMS’s on chassis dynamometer and on road, considering the quality and the correlations of results. Particle number measuring syst… Show more

“…PEMS measure undiluted exhaust gas with all the associated challenges (e.g., condensation, wear of instruments) [19]. In contrast to studies assessing instruments for ambient air or personal exposure (e.g., [20][21][22][23][24][25]), the assessment of PN PEMS is limited [13,[26][27][28][29]. The studies gave maximum differences of 50% (light-duty) to 65% (heavy-duty) to the laboratory systems for the majority of the cases.…”

“…A further big step in the EU regulation was the control of vehicles on the road with portable emissions measurement systems (PEMS) during real-driving emissions (RDE) testing [5][6][7][8]. On-board vehicle testing requires small, lightweight instruments and consequently the technical requirements of the laboratory grade equipment were relaxed for PEMS.…”

“…Majority of publications pertains to engine testing in research tests based on the averaged values [14][15][16][17][18][19][20]. Such engine are homologation test ones performed on a chassis dynamometer whose characteristic feature is that the processes of velocity and motion resistance may be deemed as determined based on the repeatability of the tests.…”

“…As has already been mentioned, majority of the publications treating on the properties of combustion engines operating under dynamic states, determined by the velocity processes and motion resistance in the test, mainly contain the results from the entire test [14][15][16][17][18][19][20][21]. Merkisz and Pielecha [20] presented the results of investigations on the exhaust emissions from a diesel engine under actual traffic conditions.…”
