The aim of this study was to elaborate a taxonomic survey on the testate amoebae of the Family Arcellidae in coastal streams in the State of Rio de Janeiro. Six samplings were conducted in Ubatiba coastal stream (Maricá, RJ). In total, 130 liters water were filtered through a conical net of 60-μm mesh and preserved in 4% formalin. Organisms were identified with the aid of an inverted trinocular microscope. The morphological characteristics (lobose testate amoebae with shell composed of granular chitinoid elements) of each species were recorded. The species were described and illustrated. For the verification of new taxa records of Arcellidae in Rio de Janeiro and their distribution in Brazil, a search based on index articles by Scopus, Web of Science and Google Scholar using the keywords "tecamebas", "testate amoebae", "Arcella", "Arcellidae", "Brazil" and "Rio de Janeiro", was performed. Eight Arcellidae species were recorded. Some ecological and taxonomic information was provided. Due to the small amount of information on testate amoebae, this study is important because it reduces the knowledge gap regarding this community in the State of Rio de Janeiro. Furthermore, we suggest new studies on species identification to be conducted to expand regional knowledge about these organisms.

The coastal areas, the most populated regions in the world, are those which have undergone the greatest human influence. In Brazilian southeastern coast, the region around Guanabara Bay (GB) is one of the most densely populated, with large cities, such as Rio de Janeiro and Niteroi, and is highly industrialized. Due to anthropic activities tones of effluents, waste and sewage is daily released in GB. Despite, several works have been performed aiming to study the current and past human influence in GB, the sources of pollutants that have impacted this bay since the late nineteenth century. This work is a new contribution aiming to identify the main sources of pollution in the northern/northeast region of GB using stable isotopes of lead (Pb) and metal concentrations during the last decades. It analyses results obtained along the core T3 collected in the northeast region of Guanabara Bay, near the Guapimirim Environmental Protected Area (known as Apa de Guapimirim), a mangrove fringe. Twenty-two sediment samples collected along this core were submitted to grain size, total organic carbon content (TOC), elemental concentrations (Ag, Ca, Cu, P, Pb, S and Zn) and stable isotopes of lead (Pb) analyses. The sediment accumulation rate was estimated by 210Pb. Results of core T3 were compared with similar data acquired in core T8, collected in Guanabara Bay, at north of Paquetá island. The comparison of the geochemical results allowed to verify that both cores recorded the same reality. Previous works have shown that the northern/northeast region of Guanabara Bay is low polluted by metals, however, since the ≈1950 a marked increase in eutrophication and metal contamination and another noticeable pulse after ≈1970, were recorded in both cores studied in this work. The 206Pb/207Pb values suggest that the main source of pollutants to northern/northeast region of GB since the second half of the 20th century have been related to deforestation and landfill and embankment engineering works preformed around the GB, in addition to mineral products applied in industrial goods, as well as oil, agricultural and organic loads. FONTES DE POLUENTES NA ÁREA NORTE / NORDESTE DA BAÍA DE GUANABARA (SE, BRASIL), DESDE O SÉCULO XIX, COM BASE EM ISÓTOPOS DE CHUMBO E CONCENTRAÇÕES DE METAIS ResumoAs áreas costeiras, as mais populosas do mundo, são as que têm recebido a maior influência humana. No litoral sudeste brasileiro, a região em torno da Baía de Guanabara (GB), uma das mais densamente povoadas, com grandes cidades, como Rio de Janeiro e Niterói, é altamente industrializada. Devido às atividades antrópicas toneladas de efluentes, resíduos e esgoto são liberados diariamente na GB. Apesar de vários trabalhos terem sido realizados com o objetivo de estudar a influência humana atual e passada na GB, não se sabe quais têm sido as fontes de poluentes mais impactantes nesta baía desde o final do século XIX. Assim, este trabalho tem como principal objetivo identificar as principais fontes de poluição na região norte / nordeste da GB usando isótopos estáveis de chumbo (Pb) e concentrações de metais nas últimas décadas. Analisa os resultados obtidos ao longo do testemunho T3, coletado na região nordeste da Baía de Guanabara, próximo à Área Ambiental Protegida de Guapimirim (conhecida como Apa de Guapimirim), uma orla de mangue. Vinte e duas amostras de sedimentos coletadas ao longo deste testemunho foram submetidas a análises granulométricas, teor de carbono orgânico total (COT), concentrações elementares (Ag, Ca, Cu, P, Pb, S e Zn) e isótopos estáveis de chumbo (Pb). A taxa de acumulação de sedimentos foi estimada com Pb210. Os resultados do testemunho T3 foram comparados com dados semelhantes adquiridos no testemunho T8, coletado na Baía de Guanabara, a norte da ilha de Paquetá. A comparação dos resultados geoquímicos permitiu verificar que os dois testemunhos registram a mesma realidade. Trabalhos anteriores mostraram que a região norte / nordeste da Baía de Guanabara é pouco poluída por metais, no entanto, observou-se nos dois testemunhos que desde 1950 aumentou acentuadamente a eutrofização e a concentração de metais tendo ocorrido um outro pulso de contaminação depois de 1970. Os valores de 206Pb / 207Pb sugerem que as principais fontes de poluentes na região norte / nordeste da GB, desde a segunda metade do século 20, estiveram relacionadas com o desmatamento e aterros em torno da GB, além de minerais aplicados em produtos indústrias, e ainda petróleo, produtos aplicados na agricultura e matéria orgânica. Phosphorus is an essential element for life and, when scarce, this macronutrient is a limiting factor for primary production. Phosphorus (P) is a widely used element in the composition of fertilizers, besides being present in large quantities in domestic effluents. Its accumulation in the springs is related to the proliferation of algae and cyanobacteria. In excess, P is a pollutant that contributes greatly to the eutrophication, development of reduced conditions and deterioration of water bodies. In order to understand how the anthropogenic action affected the accumulation of P in the freshwater reservoir of Salto Grande, Americana City (São Paulo State, Brazil), the evaluation of a temporal sedimentary record was carried out. For this purpose, a sediment core collected in the reservoir of Salto Grande was studied. The sediment core recorded the reservoir history since its filling in 1950. The comparison of P concentrations along the core with the population growth curve indicates that the population growth in the surrounding region has had a direct impact on the accumulation of P in the freshwater reservoir of Salto Grande. The eutrophication history of this major continental ecosystem of São Paulo State, was reflected by this sewage-derived from loading of P. ResumoO fósforo é um elemento essencial para a vida e, quando escasso, esse macronutriente é um fator limitante para a produção primária. O fósforo (P) é um elemento amplamente utilizado na composição de fertilizantes, além de estar presente em grande quantidade nos efluentes domésticos. A sua acumulação nas nascentes está relacionada à proliferação de algas e cianobactérias. Em excesso, o P é um poluente que contribui grandemente para a eutrofização, desenvolvimento de condições redutoras e deterioração dos corpos d'água. Para entender como a ação antropogênica afetou o acúmulo de P no reservatório de água doce de Salto Grande, na cidade de Americana, Estado de São Paulo (SE Brasil) foi realizada a avaliação de um registro temporal sedimentar. Para tanto, foi estudado um testemunho de sedimentos de 2,37m coletado no reservatório de Salto Grande. O testemunho registrou a história do reservatório desde seu preenchimento, em 1950. A comparação das concentrações de P ao longo do testemunho com a curva de crescimento populacional e de pluviosidade indica que estas variáveis tiveram um impacto direto no acúmulo de P no reservatório de água doce de Salto Grande.
