Test-retest reliability, internal consistency, construct validity and factor structure of a falls risk perception questionnaire in older adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus: a prospective cohort study

Abstract: BackgroundOlder adults with type 2 diabetes (DM2) are at increased risk of falling due to complications including: diabetic peripheral neuropathy, diabetic retinopathy, autonomic neuropathy and diabetic foot ulcers. The purpose of this study was to determine the test-retest reliability, internal consistency, construct validity and to perform factor analysis of a new falls Risk Perception Questionnaire (RPQ) in older community-dwelling adults with DM2.MethodsA prospective cohort of 30 community-dwelling older a… Show more

“…For the measurement of internal consistency reliability, the researchers used the Cronbach's alpha of each construct. The results in Table 2 show that for each construct, the α values ranged between .729 and .835 while the CR values ranged between .833 and .915, thereby satisfying the minimum requirement of CR > .06 for internal consistency reliability (Kawakami et al, 2020;Gravesande et al, 2019), hence demonstrating the presence of adequate internal consistency reliability in the data. Content validity in the study was assured through a rigorous literature review relating to all three constructs (Pallant, 2016).…”

“…Six were excluded, as their answers deviated significantly between the first and second surveys. The correlation was judged to be very high if the correlation coefficient was 0.9 or more, high if it was between 0.7 and 0.9, relatively high between 0.4 and 0.7, low between 0.2 and 0.4, and no correlation if it was less than 0.2 [ 21 , 22 ].…”

“…Because this scale provides an understandable measure of the fear of falling in the elderly and has excellent metric properties, the FES-I was chosen to measure the fear of falling in our study [39][40][41].…”
