Utilizing the Expectancy Value Theory to Predict Lecturer Motivation to Apply Culturally Responsive Pedagogies in Universities in Botswana

Abstract: The expectancy value theory (EVT) has been used in many studies to predict the motivation processes of individuals with regard to how they think and act in particular ways. Critical to how individuals think and act are the three elements of the EVT, namely the expectancy cognition (expectancy), instrumentality cognition (instrumentality) and valence. This study therefore seeks to establish whether the EVT could be used to predict and explain the motivation of lecturers to apply culturally responsive pedagogies… Show more

“…While increasing student knowledge of the need for active learning and decreasing participation resistance among students fosters enthusiasm for learning, external factors are useful for analyzing students' motivation for learning (Capone, 2022). The extent to which learners enjoy engaging in active learning is positively correlated with both their perception that doing so makes learning knowledge more successful and their satisfaction with doing so (Rudhumbu & Plessis, 2021). Generating learning settings where students feel good about themselves by embracing their individuality gives them the motivation to learn (Reash & Lawin, 2021).…”

“…Expectancy components are useful to explore learners' motivation in learning because increasing the perception of the value of active learning among learners and reducing learners' resistance to participation inculcates the learning motivation (Pintrich & DeGroot, 1990). The learners' perception of their ability to learn information better because of active learning and their enjoyment of engaging with active learning positively influence their enjoyment of participating in active learning (Rudhumbu & Plessis, 2021).…”
